2. Future Ready 21 (FR21) is an initiative in Klein that expands upon the existing 1:1 program by placing a device in the hands of every Klein ISD student in grades 3-8 over the next five years. What is Future Ready 21?

3. With guidance from teachers, students will be able to have a variety of learning experiences – no longer chalkboards with paper and pencil. When each student has a device, it allows teachers to create an exciting learning environment that can challenge each student at their own level and pace. We have an obligation to prepare our students for the future. And we know digital tools and resources as well as time using technology will help our students be future ready. Why now? What’s different?

4. Each student, upon meeting the criteria, will receive an individually assigned Lenovo 11e Yoga Touch Chromebook, a carrying case, and a charger. Students will be expected to bring their Chromebook to each class everyday inside of their provided carrying case. Students are not allowed to use alternative carrying cases as these were specifically designed to meet Klein’s needs. What will my student receive?

5. What’s a Yoga Chromebook? A Yoga Chromebook is able to go into four different modes: 1.Laptop 2.Stand 3.Tent 4.Tablet This allows students to customize their learning experience even further.

6. A Chromebook is a laptop that runs on a Chrome operating system (instead of an OS like Windows 10 or Mac Snow Leopard). Programs are not installed on a Chromebook, but rather “apps” or “extensions” are added to the Chrome browser. A Chromebook is designed to be connected to the Internet to use many cloud resources, but it still has limited capabilities off-line. Because there are not any programs, a Chromebook starts instantly after an initial login. So what’s a Chromebook?

7.  Security is in place on each system to prevent certain activities and certain types of downloads (including extensions and apps).  Internet filtering software automatically filters all access to the Internet through District technology resources. While off campus, students will continue to be filtered on their Chromebook.  No software can filter 100% of improper content, so parents/guardians are responsible for monitoring their child’s access to the internet when the student is off campus. 8.  Students have five school days after an incident (or discovery of an incident) to report any damages or theft to the campus repair center through the online Work Order System.  Students will be required to answer a series of questions to help gather more information about what is wrong with their Chromebook.  If the problem cannot be corrected quickly, a replacement Chromebook will be issued to the student. The replacement Chromebook will now become the student’s actual Chromebook. Damages and Repair

9.  If a student thinks their Chromebook is lost and/or stolen, they need to go to the campus repair center and fill out a “Missing Chromebook Report”.  If a student knows that their Chromebook has been stolen and already has a police case number, they need to go to the campus repair center and fill out a “Missing Chromebook Report”.  In either case the district will issue a replacement Chromebook to the student, if available, as soon as possible. 10.  Parents can go online and select if they would like to pay the $30 for the Accidental Loss/Damage Protection (non-refundable) or the $200 Chromebook Security Deposit (refundable). Parents only need to select one option ($30 or $200, not both).  When parents go online to pay they can also electronically sign the agreement form. Online Payment

15. As part of the FR21 initiative, students will receive access to Google Apps for Education (GAFE) through individual, District-provided GAFE accounts. GAFE is a suite of production products (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, etc.) that enables collaboration with other students in real time and provides a place to store documents safely in a cloud environment, which allows access to documents and files from any device that has access to the Internet. Use of GAFE may require the collection of students’ personal information for the purpose of providing GAFE services to Klein ISD and its students. 16.  Students will be led through several courses on Digital Citizenship to ensure that students understand the best way to work in a digital environment with appropriate responsibility.  They will also be led through “Chromebook Camp” where they learn how to properly care for their Chromebook and how to access appropriate online resources. 17. In the classroom, teachers can monitor what students are doing using a software product called DyKnow Cloud. This software not only allows teachers to see what students are doing, but it also allows teachers to limit what students have access to during their class time. Teachers are also able to interact with students gathering real-time feedback on understanding that enables them to adjust their lessons appropriately to help all students master concepts. 18.  Can I decorate my Chromebook? No. Stickers and personalization are not permitted.  Can I use my Chromebook on the bus? No. Students need to keep their Chromebook inside of the provided case at all times while travelling.  Can I get my Chromebook repaired somewhere else? No. Only Klein ISD technicians can service a Klein ISD Chromebok.  Can I clean my screen with 409 or Windex? No. Only a soft cloth should be used on the screen. If necessary, stop by the repair center and they will assist you in cleaning it.  Can I access the internet at home? Yes. Chromebooks can join existing wireless networks and can also be “hardwired” to a switch, router or hub. FAQ

19.  What if I forget to charge my Chromebook? There are classroom chargers available to help during class.  How am I going to get my classwork? Through our Learning Management System (LMS), Google Classroom  I don’t have internet at home, will I be able to use my Chromebook? Yes. You’ll be able to use it to work on schoolwork and when you return on campus you can upload any documents as necessary.  What if I lose my charger? You’ll need to purchase a replacement charger.  What if I leave Klein? You’ll need to return your Chromebook and all equipment to the campus repair center. FAQ con’t
