Important points about Salsa - Originated in the Caribbean, specifically in Puerto Rico and Cuba - The musical style “salsa” comes from combinations of other Latin musical forms such as “son”, “mambo”, and Latin jazz - Salsa as we know it today originated in New York City in the 1960’s and 1970’s - We cannot talk about Salsa music without talking about Salsa dancing.

Salsa has it’s roots in the African rhythms brought to the Caribbean by slaves in the 1600’s-1800’s. Styles such as Mambo, Son, Cha Cha Cha, and Rumba gained popularity in the United States after having been brought here by Cuban immigrants. (1930- 1960) Once these styles began to mix with the more modern influences of Soul, Rock, Pop and Jazz, the music that was born became known as salsa Why is it called “Salsa”????? Tito Puente once said “I’m a musician, not a cook”!

The principle defining instrument of the Salsa sound is the trombone. Other common instrumentation includes piano, bass, timbales, congos, trumpet and clave. Salsa works on a 4/4 time signature. This means that there are four beats played for every measure. However, one of the defining sounds of the rhythm of Salsa is what is called the Clave rhythm. Clave-the sound of salsa's rhythm

So, what are they singing about?

First and foremost salsa is a dance music. It’s purpose is to make you want to move. So very often the lyrics were not very important to song. It wasn’t until artists like Ruben Blades and Willie Colòn came along that Salsa singers began to introduce social messages into the song form.

It’s a fast 2/4 beat rhythm The typical instruments used for merengue are accordion, bass guitar, guitar, saxophone, trumpet, sometimes trombone, tuba, tambora (a two sided drum) and a güira,which is a percussion instrument that sounds like a maraca.

Some singers are Juan Luis Guerra, Juan Luis, Sergio Vargas, Eddy Herrera, and the queen of merengue, Milly Quezada. Also Elvis Crespo, with his greatest hit “Suavemente”Suavemente In 1980 meruengue was so big it even beat Salsa in popularity

Lo que importa de Bachata -Bachata originated in the Dominican Republic and remains one of the most popular music forms on the island. -The word “bachata” has been said to mean “a party”, some say it means “trash”. Hmmm……. - bachata songs typically deal with romantic themes and the genre has it’s roots in bolero and merengue styles.

Bachata is a guitar dominated form that came about during the early 1950’s in the Dominican Republic. “Bachatas” were informal parties often in people’s backyards. People would bring their guitars and drums and improvise songs. The earliest Bachata songs were romantic tunes, not necessarily intended for dancing. In the early years of Bachata, popular radio was dominated by the sounds of Merengue and Salsa. Bachata was looked upon as a lower class and crude musical style and was never played on Dominican national radio until the 1990’s.

Bachata is played in a 4/4 “compas” or time signature, just like Salsa!! The principal instrument used is the guitar. In addition you commonly find drum kit/hand drums, bass, and additional back up rhythm instruments. Horns are rarely if ever used in Bachata. A second rhythm guitar typically accents the rhythm. The important facts Flamenco originated in Andalusia (Spain) It is a genre or music and dance that originated in southern Spain The word Flamenco means “Escapee Peasant” because it derives from Andulasian Arabic Fellah or meaning “gypsy” from the synonymous word flamec “Flama” meaning in Spanish llama which is flame or fire and “enco” which its suffix meaning having similarity of can express the flaming passion in Flamenco music, song and dance.

Cumbia is the product of cultural fusion of native Colombians, Africans, and the Spanish during colonial times The African influence gives the rhythm of the drums while the Indigenous based flute blends in the melody. The European influence provides some variations in the melodies, choreography and costumes of the dancers. Cumbia began as a courtship dance. African slaves brought with them the tradition of the males dancing in front of a potential mate while they pretended not to be interested

Compas= 4/4 Instrumentacion- The male flute or gaita macho which has one hole gives rhythmic and harmonic support to the female flute or gaita hembra which has five holes and carries the melodies. The mouthpiece of these flutes is constructed using hardened bees wax that has been covered in coal dust to seal it. A turkey feather is used to blow air through the gaita. Finally, the flauta de millo or millo flute has four to six holes, is a native Colombian instrument made from the millo cane and used to help carry the melody. Initially, cumbia was only instrumental and the inclusion of lyrics and vocals came later.
