3 As is the case with many subjects in Aleph, the best way to describe the “Category Mechanism Setup” is to use an example. In this case we start with an example of an author (AUT index in 100 field) and subject (SUB index in 650 4 field). The text of the field will be the same for the subject and author, but will have completely different meanings. Our examples here are merely to show how the feature works Introduction

4 In addition to the bibliographic record we will have an authority record with 100 and 400 fields. In the bibliographic records both the 100 and 650 fields will have text changed because of the authority record text. We will then do a second case with similar records, but after having set up the “Category Mechanism Setup”. In the second case only the 100 field of the bibliographic record will change, and not also the 650. This is because of the “Category Mechanism Setup”. Introduction

5 For additional information on the category method see ALEPH Syslib Guide – Authorities, section “Category Mechanism Setup” The main point is that if you use the Category Mechanism Setup then the system will take into account the second and third positions of the tags for a heading’s uniqueness and matching algorithms. Additional information

6 Our author will be “"Chips"”, which is actually an abbreviation for “The IT Portal of Chhattisgarh” (http://"Chips".gov.in/).http://"Chips".gov.in/ Our subject will be “"Chips"”, which in this case is the fried food made out of potatoes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potato_chip).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potato_chip We will now enter the headings into records and not be using the category method The sample headings

7 We will see that the subject "Chips" (the food) will get updated to the IP Portal (not the food). We will then do a similar example using the “Category Mechanism Setup” and see how change this situation. The example

8 Here are the relevant tables parts of the related when not using the category method The tables as they are now in USM01 il-aleph02-19(4) USM01-YOELK>>egrep 'AUT |SUB ' tab00.eng H AUT ACC 01 00 00 Authors H SUB ACC 01 00 00 General Subjects il-aleph02-19(4) USM01-YOELK>>egrep '100 |650#4' tab01.eng D 100 01 00 0000 AUT 100 LME-Personal Name D 650#4 00 0000 SUB 650 LSubject-not specified il-aleph02-19(4) USM01-YOELK>>egrep 'AUT |SUB ' tab11_acc | egrep '100|650#4' 100## 9 - AUT -e468 650#4 SUB -68 il-aleph02-19(4) USM01-YOELK>>egrep ‘^AUT|^SUB' tab_aut AUT 1 USM10 SUB 1 USM10

11 The tables as they are now in USM10 il-aleph02-19(4) USM10-YOELK>>egrep '^.00|^.50' tab_acc_category 100## 0 150## 0 400## 0 450## 0 il-aleph02-19(4) USM10-YOELK>>grep -v ^! tab_z105 UPDATE-DOC 4 USM01 il-aleph02-19(4) USM10-YOELK>>egrep '^.00|^.50' tab11_acc | grep GEN 100## GEN -6 150## GEN -6 400## GEN -wi56 450## GEN -wi56 Note: at this stage tab_acc_category in usm01 and usm10 has only “zeroes” in column 2

12 Sample records in USM01 "Chips" appears in field 650 4 in record 51095. "Chips" appears in field 100 in record 51096.

13 The authority record The USM10 we have authority record 50020 It has "Chips" in the 400 field

14 Sample records in USM01 got changed In USM01 both records have gotten changed In this case we really only “wanted” the one with "Chips" as IP Portal to get changed, not the one with "Chips" as food. This should not have gotten changed (but did) "Chips" the food is not the IT Portal The 650 got changed to 600 (the system “thinks” this is a name) This should have gotten changed (and did)

15 Now using the Category Mechanism Setup We have changed the 0 to a 1 in column 2. This means “The system will take into account the second and third positions of the tags for headings uniqueness and authorities matching algorithms.” il-aleph02-19(4) USM10-YOELK>>egrep '^.00|^.50' tab_acc_category 100## 1 150## 1 400## 1 450## 1 In the USM10 library we will change the file tab_acc_category:

16 Now using the category method We have changed the 0 to a 1 in column 2. This means “The system will take into account the second and third positions of the tags for headings uniqueness and authorities matching algorithms.” il-aleph02-19(4) USM01-YOELK>>egrep '100|600|650' tab_acc_category 100## 1 600## 1 650## 1 In the USM01 library we will change the file tab_acc_category:

17 Now using the category method Our only table change at this point was to change the 0 to a 1 in column 2 of tab_acc_category in the bibliographic and authority libraries.

18 The new sample headings Our author will be “"Dips"”, which is actually an abbreviation for “Distribution planning systems” (www."Dips".co.uk/ ).www."Dips".co.uk/ Our subject will be “"Dips"”, which in this case is a type of sauce into which food is dipped (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dip_%28food%2 9).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dip_%28food%2 9 We will now enter the headings into records and be using the category method

19 New sample bibliographic records "Dips" appears in field 650 4 in record 51097. "Dips" appears in field 100 in record 51098.

20 The authority record Our authority record appears as follows:

21 Change to the bibliographic record The Category Mechanism Setup worked!! “Dips” in 650 did not change (our authority record was for an author) “Dips” in 100 did change. Before we setup the Category Mechanism “Chips” changed in both 650 and 100 No change Change

22 The Z01_Category When the Category Mechanism Setup is not used then the z01_category will be ZZZ Here it is for AUT “IT Portal of …”

23 The Z01_Category When the Category Mechanism Setup is used then the z01_category will be the second two digits of the MARC field from which the heading comes Here it is for AUT “Distribution planning …”

24 The Z01_Category Here are the sample authority headings which were made before and after the change to tab_acc_category. usm10@ALEPH19> select Z01_CATEGORY from Z01 where Z01_REC_KEY like 'GEN LCHIPS %'; **** Hit return to continue **** ZZZ 1 row selected. usm10@ALEPH19> select Z01_CATEGORY from Z01 where Z01_REC_KEY like 'GEN LDIPS %'; 00 1 row selected. usm10@ALEPH19> select Z01_CATEGORY from Z01 where Z01_REC_KEY like 'GEN LIT PORTAL %'; ZZZ 1 row selected. usm10@ALEPH19> select Z01_CATEGORY from Z01 where Z01_REC_KEY like 'GEN LDISTRIBUTION PLANNING %'; 00 1 row selected.

25 Background processes and indexing As with other index-related tables, after making changes to tab_acc_category the demons ue_01, ue_08 and ue_11 should be restarted In order for the change to take place on all headings in the system which were indexed before the change to tab_acc_category was made indexes will need to be rebuilt in both the authority and bibliographic libraries.
