2 ELECTION CONTROVERSY George W. Bush (R) v. Al Gore (D) Gore wins popular vote, Bush wins electoral vote b/c he wins Florida  Controversial vote count, Gore team demanded a revote, Supreme Court took on the case Bush v. Gore:  5-4 vote to stop the recount ∴ Bush wins the presidency

3 BUSH’S AGENDA Follows Reaganomics:  Tax cuts will stimulate the economy ∴ Bush pushed a $1.3 trillion tax cut thru Congress in 2001  More $ in hands of consumer, but national budget at stake as well  Increase consumer spending, investment, + create new jobs  Did increase the national budget No Child Left Behind  Federal performance standards in public schools 2003:  Bush increased spending on Medicare to help the elderly afford the rising cost of prescriptions

5 AMERICA’S WAR ON TERRORISM Bush declared a “war on terrorism”  General consensus among American ppl that this was the most important priority

6 INVADING AFGHANISTAN Invade Afghanistan:  Try to attack the Taliban for harboring terrorists  Taliban = Islamic fundamentalists that ran the gov’t  Al Qaeda led by Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan Bin Laden opposed:  U.S. support of Israel  Presence of American troops in Saudi Arabia  Economic boycott against Iraq

7 INVADING AFGHANISTAN The Taliban refused to turn over Osama bin Laden  U.S., G.B., and other U.S. allies overthrew the Taliban in 3 months  American troops captured several Al Qaeda leaders but bin Laden escaped.

8 IMPROVING NATIONAL SECURITY Patriot Act: passed by Congress shortly after the 9/11 attacks  Gives law enforcement (FBI/NSA) broad powers when screening for suspected terrorists  Detain +/or deport ppl w/ suspected ties to terrorists Bush created Dept. of Homeland Security  Coordinate domestic security matters w/ all levels of gov’t + agencies

11 LAUNCHING OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM October 2002:  Congress authorized Bush to use force in Iraq March 19, 2003: Operation Iraqi Freedom  American + British forces invade Iraq  Immediately take down Baghdad, capture Saddam + other Iraqi leaders in the following months

12 DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ Jan, 2005:  First fully elected gov’t 2006:  “Surge” led by General David Petraeus restores order  Iraq gets a constitution  April 23, 2006 - Jawad al-Maliki elected as Prime Minister

16 GTMO Prisoners at Guantanamo  Debate b/w nat’l security + civil liberties  Detain suspected terrorists as criminals charged w/ a crime or as enemy combatants.  Lawyer and trial vs. none…  Supreme Court tended to rule on the side of the suspected terrorists = protection of civil liberties.

17 NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY (NSA) After 9/11 security nation-wide increased significantly  NSA began wiretapping international calls, specifically those w/ suspected ties to terrorism  Patriot Act gave NSA the right conduct searches of phone, computer, etc…

18 SOCIAL SECURITY Bush proposed that workers can put 4% of their income in private accounts rather than in Social Security  Private accounts would then cover the shortfall in SS.  Never even went to Congress b/c little public support. BUT… Bush did convince Congress to pass a new Medicare Program  Help cover the cost of prescriptions.

19 HURRICANE KATRINA August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina smashed the Gulf Coast  Extreme devastation, 1,200 ppl killed,  Little clean drinking water, food destroyed, thousands homeless  New Orleans  levees broke and water crushed the city  Ppl took refuge in the Superdome. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was slow to respond.  Reporters kept asking where the gov’t was to help  Took much criticism  Bush fired the head of FEMA  Congress approved a $200 billion budget to rebuild.

21 2008 ECONOMIC RECESSION In 2007 many ppl that were approved for a housing loan began defaulting on their mortgages.  b/c of their low credit/income they should have never gotten the loan in the 1 st place Housing Market crashed  Packages housing loans  Global recession when they defaulted  Concept of “selling debt, ”betting against debt, shorts…
