Presenting, “Every ‘Noun’ and Again” FEATURING…MR. SHERRY AND HIS STUDENTS

What is a noun? A noun is a person, place, or thing that is found in a piece of literature/writing. Other things such as states, ideas or qualities can also be considered nouns. “Three of his buddies wanted to borrow John’s computer.”

Find the noun(s) 1. Joe picked up groceries from the store. 2. The phone is ringing. 3. Have you ever been to the Empire State Building? 4. Last summer, I visited San Diego. 5. Can you jump over that box? 6. Do you have a pet squirrel? 7. What did you pack for lunch today? 8. I packed a peanut butter and mustard sandwich for lunch. 9. How long does it take to make a balloon animal? 10. It usually takes 2 minutes to make a zebra but only about 10 seconds to make a worm or a snake.

What purpose does the noun have within a sentence? The noun functions as… 1. the main or only elements of subjects of verbs 2. objects of verbs or prepositions

Plural vs. singular All nouns are either plural or singular. When reading, it is important to keep the form of the noun written as it stands. When writing, it is important to write the correct form of the noun depending on the structure of your sentence. Checkpoint: write a complete sentence using at least one noun. Checkpoint: now, write that same sentence but you must change your noun from singular to plural or from plural to singular. (take note of how the sentence changes!)

Common Nouns Common nouns are the general nouns used for people, places or things. They are not specific and do not have to be capitalized unless they are the first word in the sentence. Be cautious when it comes to nicknames!

Concrete Nouns Concrete nouns deal with the five senses. They can be seen and perceived in many different ways. Some concrete nouns fit the description for more than one. Checkpoint: What are the five senses?

Touch Bob leaped toward the basket and just grazed the rim. Before she went outside, Kate had to rummage through the garage to find the rake. Did you take my pencil? Why are all of the playing cards laying on the floor? Today after school, I picked some fresh flowers for my grandmother. the act you do when you hold, caress, feel or otherwise encounter something with your hand.

Taste the sensation produced when a substance in the mouth reacts chemically with taste receptor cells located on taste buds in the oral cavity, mostly on the tongue. What kinds of things could we talk about when discussing taste? 1. Julius grabbed the orange juice form the fridge and stormed out of the house. 2. Paul was very excited when he found out that the crab legs were all-you-can-eat. 3. JJ prefers to keep his ice cream in the basement. 4. Reggie ran out onto the field with pride swelling in his chest. 5. Doug has always had a crush on Patty Mayonnaise.

Smell to perceive the odor or scent of through stimuli affecting the olfactory nerves. Examples of nouns dealing with the sense of smell… 1. My mother is always smelling the neighbors’ flowers. 2. Why would you not take out your trash? 3. The phone began to ring as soon as I walked in the door. 4. Gary likes to have a cup of coffee every morning. 5. Would your doctor recommend that you sniff Magic Markers?

Sound vibrations that travel through the air or another medium and can be heard when they reach a person's or animal's ear.

The trumpet is so loud! Does your sister have a drum set in the garage? The announcer forcefully yelled, “B…18!” into the microphone. As the police cruiser sped past our house, the tires screeched when it made the sharp left turn onto Park Ave. The printer made a loud noise when it fell off of Mr. Sherry’s desk.

Sight the faculty or power of seeing. 1. The ice cream sandwich looked delicious when she held it up to her face. 2. The taxi cab driver ran that red light on purpose. 3. Her bravery stood out more than anything else after she rescued the boy from the clutched of the evil kangaroo. 4. Is there a difference between innocence and resilience?

Abstract Nouns Abstract nouns cannot be touched, smelled, seen, heard, or tasted. Think of these as the opposite of the concrete noun. Example… When Joseph dived into the violent waves to rescue a drowning puppy, his bravery amazed the crowd of fishermen standing on the dock.

activity There are 2 bins of paper that have been cut up and mixed up. One bin has paper with a letter written on the paper. The second bin has “person”, “place”, “thing” written on the paper slips. Each of you need one piece of paper from each pile. (2 pieces of paper total per student) The type of noun that you will be creating is on the next slide. You’re task is to create a noun using the letter that you have selected and the specific type (person, place or thing) and then use it in a sentence. Be prepared to share what you came up with!
