Visualizations for the Public from the LSST Integrated Model Suzanne Jacoby, Bill Schoening, John Andrew, Chris Smith … August 18, 2016 1

2 Visualizations for the Public from the LSST Telescope, Site, and Camera Models A discussion of working with the LSST engineering models to generate visualizations for public consumption. The Communications team wants to generate visualizations (2D, 3D, still and video) for the public website, talks, conferences, etc. Specifically, in this this breakout we will Discuss the current status of the models, or integrated model, Understand what the visualizers need vs what the engineers produce, Sort out what resources and skills are needed to bridge that gap, and Create an action plan for moving forward.

3 Examples of Existing Public and Engineering Animations from the Model Todd Mason videos Chris Smith camera video Full dome LSST on site renderings done @ Adler Flyby sequence put into Cal Academy of Science planetarium show IN2P3 360 video (You can view it in its spherical format with Google Chrome, or on an Android mobile with a Google Cardboard for a real immersive view, or on iPhone with the KIRORU 360 app) http://andromede13.info/4gaelle/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWAn6Gq_NBM Mirror removal and similar videos generated for FDR Drone video

4 What do we have to work with? Solid Works drawings Show us the PDM Vault Where is it? What’s in it? Drone video Plans moving forward Model of site terrain?

5 What do the Public Visualizers Want? Formats? Specific content modules? Software? Time & Expertise from Engineers?

Specific request from Gaelle Shifrin @ IN2P3 Let me come back to you about a follow up on the 3D movie of the telescope we made last fall. For a virtual tour of the site and the telescope: The person we contacted to make this virtual tour made the following list of the extra files we might need. a 3d model of the LSST and maybe one of the geographical location (Cerro Pachón). He can use the most common 3d file formats (.obj,.STL, DWG,.3Ds, etc). drawings (in DWG, PDF formats) and pictures of LSST parts and of the Cerro Pachón site can be useful too. Input files used for "A DJI Phantom 3 Pro Drone is being used on Cerro Pachón to monitor LSST construction progress from a birds-eye view. Multiple images will be used to generate a 3D model of the Summit Facility, suitable for inspection via virtual reality" (http://www.lsst.org/news/%E2%80%9Cpiering%E2%80%9D-down-lsst-construction).http://www.lsst.org/news/%E2%80%9Cpiering%E2%80%9D-down-lsst-construction

Other Specific Requests 1. Following a photon from a galaxy far, far away to an individuals smart phone (for example): Photons emitted Travel through space and earth’s atmosphere (simulation data useful here?) Follows optical path of telescope mirrors, lenses Detected on focal plane Digital signal goes from Camera through pipeline software to NCSA Processed, filtered alerts, images, and catalogs available to users Smart phone app announces detection of supernova for follow-up observation

Action Plan Going Forward Simplify Model Format conversion Next Steps Dates?we made last fall.
