Pre-assessment: Motion and Design K now K now What do you know about motion and design of vehicles? What do you know about motion and design of vehicles? W ant to know W ant to know What do you want to know about motion and design of vehicles? What do you want to know about motion and design of vehicles?

Sample Inquiry-Based Lesson

Engaging Scenario You are members of a NASCAR team. This year due to the high gas prices and reported shortages, the NASCAR sponsors present a new challenge for the drivers and their teams. Each team will be given the same materials (bucket) to construct a vehicle. The winner of this year’s race will be the vehicle that travels the greatest distance using rubber band energy rather than fossil fuel. You are members of a NASCAR team. Fabulous prizes will be awarded to the team that travels the greatest distance. Fabulous prizes will be awarded to the team that travels the greatest distance.

Engaging Scenario Your pit (bucket) contains all the parts you will need for this investigation. Review your technical drawing to see how pieces fit together. Your design should be based upon the standard vehicle, but adaptations may be made by your team. Your design should be based upon the standard vehicle, but adaptations may be made by your team.

Focus Question(s) What design works best to propel the vehicle forward the greatest distance? What design works best to propel the vehicle forward the greatest distance? Describe the role of the rubber band as related to the motion of the vehicle. Describe the role of the rubber band as related to the motion of the vehicle.

Prediction Write a prediction describing what you think will happen. Write a prediction describing what you think will happen. Conditional statements Conditional statements If_____________ then____________. If_____________ then____________.OR I think _________ will happen because _______________________________. I think _________ will happen because _______________________________.

Planning Plan what to do to accomplish your task. Plan what to do to accomplish your task. Plan how to collect data. Plan how to collect data. Decide how to organize your data to share with the whole group. Decide how to organize your data to share with the whole group.

Data/Observations Time for the test drive! Time for the test drive! Record your data and observations. Record your data and observations. Use the chart paper provided so that each team can share their results. Use the chart paper provided so that each team can share their results.

What have you L earned? Examine your data. What claims can you make about the design and motion of your vehicle? Examine your data. What claims can you make about the design and motion of your vehicle? What is your evidence? What is your evidence? Revisit your prediction. Examine the prediction that you made at the beginning of the lesson. Do you wish to affirm (keep) or revise your prediction? If you wish to revise your prediction, do the revision below the one you first made. Revisit your prediction. Examine the prediction that you made at the beginning of the lesson. Do you wish to affirm (keep) or revise your prediction? If you wish to revise your prediction, do the revision below the one you first made. Making meaning Making meaning Today I learned ________________, Today I learned ________________,

Next Steps/New Questions What kind of extensions could apply to the original question? What kind of extensions could apply to the original question? What next steps could be taken to further explore this investigation? What next steps could be taken to further explore this investigation?

NEWTON’S FIRST LAW An object at rest remains at rest and an object in motion in a straight line, unless acted on by an outside force The more massive the object, the more that object tends to resist changes in its state of motion Content Blast

NEWTON’S FIRST LAW

Forces A force is a push or a pull. A force is a push or a pull. Force gives an object the energy to move, stop moving, or change direction. Force gives an object the energy to move, stop moving, or change direction.

Balanced forces do not cause a change in motion. They are equal in size and opposite in direction. Balanced forces do not cause a change in motion. They are equal in size and opposite in direction. Balanced Forces

Unbalanced Forces Unbalanced forces always cause a change in motion. They are not equal and opposite. Unbalanced forces always cause a change in motion. They are not equal and opposite.

Newton’s Third Law Forces always come in pairs - known as "action-reaction force pairs." Forces always come in pairs - known as "action-reaction force pairs."

Science Content Blast Energy - the basic ability for doing work Energy - the basic ability for doing work Potential energy - energy ready to be released Potential energy - energy ready to be released Kinetic energy - energy of motion Kinetic energy - energy of motion Friction - opposes the vehicle’s forward motion as it changes the energy of motion into the energy of heat Friction - opposes the vehicle’s forward motion as it changes the energy of motion into the energy of heat

NASCAR TEAMS Please disassemble your vehicles and return all materials to your pit (bucket). Please disassemble your vehicles and return all materials to your pit (bucket). Thank you for your cooperation!
