SMD – Surface Mounted Devices For the Central Ohio Radio Enthusiast Society – CRES- Amateur Radio Club Presented By Bill Erwin – N9CX April 2013

What This Presentation Is About ● An introduction to using SMD parts ● Demonstrate that it is practical to use SMD for small HB projects ● Show why you don't need expensive tools ● Example of a PCB using SMD parts ● Discuss challenges of using SMD ● Fred has some interesting YouTube videos

Characteristics of SMDs ● Two general types of parts/devices ● Through-hole – Parts with (long) wire leads generally cut to length – Leads go through holes (PCB) and soldered on other side ● Surface mounted – Broad category of parts with fixed lead configurations – Leads don't go through holes and are not altered – Soldered on same side (PCB) as component placement

Characteristics of SMDs SMD verses through-hole parts

Characteristics of SMDs

Characteristics of SMDs Common size codes for capacitors and resistors Size Code Approximate Size (LxW) Inch Metric Inch Metric 0402 1005*.04" x.02" 1.0 x 0.5mm 0504 1210*.05" x.04" 1.2 x 1.0mm 0603 1508.06" x.03" 1.5 x 0.8mm 0805 2012.08" x.05" 2.0 x 1.2mm 1005 2512.10" x.05" 2.5 x 1.2mm 1206 3216.12" x.06" 3.2 x 1.6mm 1210* 3225.12" x.10" 3.2 x 2.5mm 1812 4532.18" x.12" 4.5 x 3.2mm 2225 5664.22" x.25" 5.6 x 6.4mm

Characteristics of SMDs Small Outline Integrated Circuit - SOIC SOIC parts come in a variety of packages & lead configurations

Characteristics of SMDs Quad Flat Packs - Various Configurations

Why I Am Interested In SMDs Advantages I Have Found ● Lower cost printed circuit boards (PCBs) – Fabricators charge by the square inch – Smaller parts allows for a smaller PCB ● Parts are cheaper than through-hole devices – Now available in small quantities to hobbyist ● Digikey, Jameco, etc – online (look for small lots) ● Free tools to make PCBs are better than ever – Cadsoft's Eagle program for schematic & PCB – SparkFun's BatchPCB service for fabrication

Characteristics of SMDs My stock of SMDs

Latest PCB Using SM Parts So.. where are the Surface Mounted Devices?

Bottom Side Of The Board All SMD parts are on the same side

Applying Solder Paste SOLDER PASTE HAS BEEN APPLIED

SOIC14 Example After heat has been applied and solder paste melted

Memory SOICs Sometimes you cannot find an equivalent DIP. So you use and adapter with a SMD part.

Challenges of making PCBs & Using SMDs ● You must learn to use the tools for making PCBs – The software tools have steep learning curves – Good of tutorials are available online ● Different tools and techniques needed for SMDs – Soldering iron works but hot hot air is easier – Special paste (solder with flux) preferred over solder – Takes your time applying paste & orienting parts – Need headband magnifier, light, hot air, tweezers – LOTS OF PATIENCE – in the beginning

That's It For Me ● There are other options for working with SMDs – Just sharing my current preferences ● Fred has some YouTube videos you might find interesting.
