1 VCE Parent Information evening Deputy Principal-Learning and Teaching Ms. Linda McDonald

2 Senior Secondary options at Loreto College Three possible pathways : VCE – Victorian Certificate of Education VCAL – Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning VET – Vocational Education and Training or a combinations of these.

3 The VCE as a course of study Taken over two years, your daughter will be in her second year. Students in Year 12 study RE and an English plus 4 subjects Most students who complete their VCE and sit the final year exams will achieve an ATAR score. (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) Mr. Wilson will explain this soon.

4 Successful completion of the VCE In Year 12 girls will study: 2 units of English Or English Literature or English Language plus 4 other subject/studies The other subjects have to be in a 3 & 4 sequence. Some VET units can be included in VCE. 5 To achieve a Victorian Certificate of Education: Students must successfully complete:  16 VCE units over 2 years  3 out 4 English Units  demonstrate their satisfactory understanding of the learning outcomes through School Assessment Course (SACs) tasks like tests, Folios, assignments etc.  As well as regular attendance to classes.  Mr. Wilson will provide more explanation on this soon.

6 What is VCAL? Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning For students focused on vocational pathways Applied learning Different pathway Requires a VET subject 3 levels: Foundation, Intermediate and Senior 4 strands: Literacy, Numeracy, Work Related and Personal Development

7 VET and VCAL Different pathways to further education and the workplace For different ways of learning Students must apply to enter the VCAL program, Mrs Anderson is the VCAL co-ordinator. Usually our VCAL girls complete a combination of VCE subjects and VCAL.

8 What is VCAL? Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning For students focused on vocational pathways Applied learning Different pathway Requires a VET subject compulsory 2 yr. commitment. Or School Based Apprenticeship 12 months. (only a few) 3 levels: Foundation, Intermediate and Senior 4 strands: Literacy, Numeracy, Work Related Skills and Personal Development

9 VCAL Different pathways to further education and/or the workplace For students who learn more by hands on activities, doing projects, creating folios, completing work placements. Students must apply to enter the VCAL program, Mrs Anderson is the VCAL coordinator, who will hold an information session at lunchtime. Usually our VCAL girls complete a combination of VCE subjects, VCAL and one VET subject.

10 VET (Vocational Education and Training) Practically oriented subjects that provide a VCE Unit 1– 4 and an industry accredited TAFE Certificate Must do work placement Most are offered off-site, usually at Fed Uni or other schools examples of VET subjects on offer are: Music Technology Information Technology & Digital Media Sport and Recreation Community Services Some Cert III are 12 months e.g. Child Services

11 VET Subjects Scored VET studies can contribute towards VCE and ATAR score. Can be part of VCE or VCAL program. Can mean classes or work placement out of school hours. will mean having to catch up on missed classes. Can be taken as a school based apprenticeship, Cert III. Must see Ms Scott

12 Unit 3 and 4 Assessment For each Unit assessment is made up of : 1. School assessments completed at school, set, supervised and marked by your teacher. These are called SACs or SATs (School assessed tasks -SATs) (School assessed Coursework-SACs) If absent you must have a medical certificate. 2. VCAA November Examinations set and marked by the VCAA ( Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority) Every student studying Units 3 and 4 completes the General Achievement Test (GAT) in June.

13 Things to consider about subject selection. What do I see myself doing in the future? What subjects am I good at and enjoy doing? Which subjects are ‘prerequisite’ studies for the tertiary/TAFE course I’m interested in? Which subjects are ‘recommended’ studies for the tertiary/TAFE course I’m interested in?

14 Don’t make choices based on: Who you think might be teaching the class Who you think might be in the class One subject will be “easier” than another

16 Subject selection due on Friday 5 th August 2016 Discuss with current & past VCE students Discuss with current and past teachers Read the relevant details within the VCE Booklet Double check your University course guides for prerequisites. Attend Open days, look into accommodation for University.
