The Holy Spirit June 30, 2016 The previous lessons ultimately concluded with a two-fold answer to the question: Why study the Holy Spirit? We study the Holy Spirit because: 1)He is _________ (hint Mark 12:29); and 2)He is _________ (hint Acts 1:8-9 and Acts 2:1-4)

The Holy Spirit’s Presence It has been established that the Holy Spirit is “here.” But, where, in a practical sense, is He?

The Holy Spirit’s Presence  “ 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.  “When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. ”

The Holy Spirit’s Presence The Holy Spirit is/can be _______ us.

The Spirit’s Presence John 14 “16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. 17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. “

The Holy Spirit’s Presence The Holy Spirit is _______ us; and The Holy Spirit is ____ us.

The Holy Spirit He is God He is here He can be upon us He is with us He is in us But WHAT does He do?

The Holy Spirit: What He Does The Holy Spirit Renews Read John 3:1-7 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’

The Holy Spirit: What He Does The Holy Spirit Renews What thoughts and feelings do you associate with birth? _______________________________________

The Holy Spirit: What He Does The Holy Spirit Renews How would you describe Nicodemus to your friends? _______________________________________

The Holy Spirit: What He Does The Holy Spirit Renews Summarize his view of who Jesus was (v.2) _____________________________________ What was lacking from his viewpoint?_______________________________ _______ ______________________________________

The Holy Spirit: What He Does The Holy Spirit Renews Jesus talks about two births—the first a birth of the flesh, the second a birth of the spirit. Describe each birth in your own words. _______________________________________

The Holy Spirit: What He Does The Holy Spirit Renews What role does the Holy Spirit play in the new birth? _______________________________________

The Holy Spirit: What He Does The Holy Spirit Renews Why is re-birth, spiritually, necessary? _______________________________________

The Holy Spirit: What He Does The Holy Spirit Renews Have you experienced the new birth Jesus talks about in this passage? If so, describe what you recall about when or how this new birth occurred. If you have not experienced this new birth or are unsure, do not be afraid or ashamed to ask your pastor or a friend to lead you to do so. _________________________________________________

The Holy Spirit: What He Does The Holy Spirit Renews Often we hear Christians talk about “being saved” or when they “got saved.” Salvation is the complete deliverance from the penalty and power of sin. Being “saved” or “getting saved” occurs when the new birth occurs that Jesus described in John 3:1-7. How can we know that we are “saved”? _______________________________________

The Holy Spirit: What He Does The Holy Spirit Renews Read Romans 10:9-10 _______________________________________

The Holy Spirit: What He Does The Holy Spirit Renews Oftentimes people, unfortunately, mistakenly believe that when they become a member of a church, they are automatically “saved.” Is it possible to become a member of a church and still not be “saved?” Can you recall a time when you both believed and confessed the words of Romans 10:9-10? If so, describe when this happened. _________________________________________________

The Holy Spirit: What He Does The Holy Spirit Renews Who is a “Nicodemus” in your life—someone who ahs expressed an interest in Jesus but who has not yet believed in Him? Plan to communicate more about Jesus with that person this week. Ask members of the Bible Study group to pray with you for the right opportunity.
