1 HOW TO DO AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY Presented by Julie Massie Learning Advisor School of Management MGN412 Semester 1, 2016

2 Annotated Bibliography An annotated bibliography is a short (paragraph) summary (written in the present tense) of an article on a particular topic Each article is dealt with separately in a paragraph which contains a descriptive summary, focus, theme or argument, and evaluative comments on its relevance, different perspective, limitations, and what it contributes to the current topic under discussion. It may be supportive or critical.

3 First, sort out your topic/argument Your topic/ argument What do you hope to show? Who does it affect? Focusse d or general? What is a different perspect- ive? Is there bias in your intent? What is the purpose ? What gaps are in your topic?

4 Second, select articles….. Now you know what your topic or argument is going to be, select articles from highly ranked journals (see list referred to in assignment instructions) relating to that topic/argument that support what your argument is going to be. If you can find one that shows a different viewpoint, then use that to show a depth of reading. After all, an argument must have two sides. After you have read an article, think about the questions in the following diagram and this forms the basis of your annotated 150-250 word bibliography.

5 So, how do you feel about the topic now? Given you something to think about??? What is this about generally and who says so? What is the focus / argument / perspective? How did they come to this conclusion? What is the contribution / significance / link / usefulness to your topic and your audience? Does it apply now or are there changes / limitations / different circumstances which need to be taken into account?

6 Writing up the Annot. Bib. (150-200 words EACH one = 500-600 words altogether) 1.Brief summary of the article 2. Author’s background – credentials to write on this 3. Outline the argument or key themes 4. Evidence used to support – its value 5. Evaluation of information – how did the author come to this conclusion; how does it contribute to the topic; and what are the limitations or different circumstances to be taken into account 6. How useful is article for your current study?

Leadership ……….Research Today, 10(9) 122-125 This article by an award winning Harvard researcher, discusses two specific qualities that global CEO’s need to operate effectively in constantly evolving dynamic business environments. The study suggests that high level interpersonal skills and the ability to make quick, effective decisions should be encouraged and mentored in emerging leaders. These two qualities still rank highest (since a 2005 study) in importance to deal with global business challenges. The findings focus on the similarity of responses from those interviewed at CEO level, through a series of one-on-one interviews of 25 managers in global organisations across five countries carried out during 2014. The results confirm and strengthen long-standing views (AB 2000, CD 2001, EF 2006), that the most important skills of communication and decision making are the basis on which successful CEO’s maintain their capability to steer corporations successfully through complex business challenges. All the CEOs interviewed agreed that defined skills such as these were needed in their own personal staff as well as their associates. As the research is restricted to Western countries, Australian organisations should be aware that Asian trading partners may have different perspectives of the ranking of these two skills therefore further research in this area is needed. The research does however, support the idea that more professional development and mentoring of interpersonal skills and decision making strategies in young managers should be implemented to assist them to reach their full potential in global business environments.

(definition and refer to one of your annotations for theory/concept this involves) Take the ideas from the three papers and explain why they are important ideas/research and how they contribute/connect to your topic area.

10 Decide what part of the topic you want to take further (argument/problem), why it is important, and explain how this would be observed in the workplace, (how would you see it, know that it is going on).
