6 In 2014 NZQA received approximately 2.6 million internally assessed results from schools  NZQA accepts these results at face value  Internal moderation is the quality assurance process that validates these results before reported Schools must report to NZQA only those internal assessment results which have been subject to an internal moderation process (Rule 5.6b)

7 Each year NZQA externally moderate approximately 100,000 randomly selected samples  This represents approximately 3.8% of the nearly 2.6 million results reported  These are largely from the previous year’s work  This “light touch”, high trust model requires a high level of accountability  Internal moderation is the quality assurance check that demonstrates accountability  External moderation confirms the robustness of the schools internal moderation

19 Future state - External assessment Five principles of digital external assessment are that it will be:  used to enhance the student’s external assessment experience through good assessment practice that reflects current pedagogy  introduced following a thorough trial and evaluation period. (Schools are encouraged to be involved in these trials to assess their readiness)  used only if appropriate for that subject  use digital technology to enhance the marking process  developed in parallel with the digital submission of externally assessed portfolios. See handbook pages 40-42 for information on Digital Trials and Pilots in 2016

20 External moderation submission CurrentlyThe future Paper, DVD, USB via courierWe intend to have a fully automated online system for moderation available from 2017 Online by submitting URLs through online moderation plan This system will be simple and intuitive to use Google Drive, DropBox, MyPortfolio, Office 365, Blogs, Websites, etc It will still be possible to submit by courier as this system is phased in We will be consulting with the sector from March/April this year and more information will follow See handbook pages 37 and 38 for instructions on how to submit electronically

21 New Process to register for assessor support  New “Registration of Interest” process developed to give assessors the ability to indicate their preferred assessor support options.  Enables NZQA to identify needs and develop an on-demand schedule of support.  This support will include:  visits from guest speakers  online opportunities; and  face-to-face regional workshops  Registrants will also be able to indicate:  how far they could travel,  nominate times; and  request optional extras such as catering and other resources

23 Attestation survey of relationships with external providers Why was the attestation survey conducted?  An important role of NZQA is to help schools to manage risk to the credibility of the NCEA qualification.  If schools report results incorrectly using their provider code or the provider code of another external provider, then potentially these results:  Have not been assessed under credible assessment conditions  Are not available for moderation (see: Consent guidelines 8.1-8.4, 13.1 and 13.2 and Circulars A2015/024 and A2015/26) What happens next?  Your SRM will discuss your school’s attestation survey with you when they visit your school.  NZQA plans, in the future, to collect this information from your data file submission.

25 Guidance to students wishing to study overseas  Students should check the requirements of the university they are proposing to enrol in  Some Universities are asking for a Grade Point Average (GPA)  GPA calculations require at least 90 credits of reported results (N, A, M, E) at the Level of the GPA  German University Entrance requirements have changed for students enrolling in 2017  Ensure your International Dean/Coordinator checks the NZQA website for international recognition of NCEA for specific countries

26 Special Assessment Conditions - Key Dates  14 March – First time ever applications for students with Special Learning Disorders CLOSES  1 Feb – 15 April: Students previously approved (rollovers) – confirm, change or remove last years entitlement  1 April onward data files - NZQA will transfer previously approved students to the schools they are enrolled in for 2016. Their name and approved entitlements will appear on your school’s SAC ‘submitted’ or ‘rollover” list.  1 July - facility to attach approved SAC entitlements to external standards opens  1 August data file – make final external exam entries for SAC candidates  24 August – facility to attach approved SAC entitlements to external standards CLOSES.

27 2016 Digital Trials & Pilots To build on the 2015 learnings NZQA is undertaking a series of trials and pilots in 2016. Two main aims  Provide a significant step towards the transformation of the examination system  Provide an opportunity for schools to evaluate their readiness to manage digital examinations

30 Other things PNs will need to know: Communications to schools will be through the PN Involvement is on a voluntary basis only Schools will receive a set of technical specifications to assist them in evaluating their own capacity before they opt in All trial and pilot examinations will be able to be translated into Te reo if required All trial and pilot examinations will have some functionality for some students who require Special Assessment Conditions
