Physical Properties
2
Learning Goals: Define and provide examples of “physical properties” Describe the difference between quantitative and qualitative properties Identify factors that indicate that a substance has undergone a physical change
3
Describe the Object Using as many characteristics as you can, describe the object at the front of the class to the best of your ability.
4
Physical Properties Physical property = a characteristic of a substance that can be determined without changing the composition of that substance Physical properties can be determined by simply observing the substance using your five senses and measuring instruments TASK using your textbook (pg. 180-181), complete the “Physical Properties” handout
6
Qualitative Property Qualitative Property = a property of a substance that is not measured and does not have a numerical value Example: colour, odour, and texture
7
Quantitative Properties Quantitative Property = a property of a substance that is measured and has a numerical value Example: temperature, height, and mass
8
Qualitative vs. Quantitative Complete the handout “Qualitative vs. Quantitative Physical Properties”
9
Physical Properties: Stations Complete the handout by observing and recording various physical properties of the objects at the different locations/stations. Try your best to use different terms to describe the various substances/objects Answer the questions included as part of your handout.
10
Physical Change Physical Change a change in which the composition of the substance remains unaltered and no new substances are produced EXAMPLE: change of size or shape, a change of state, and dissolving
11
Conclusion Which of the following procedures are examples of a physical change? Explain your answer. Wax melting when a candle is lit Salt is dissolved in water A piece of paper is lit on fire A piece of paper is folded into a paper airplane A piece of bread is toasted in a toaster
