1 Supported by: The National Rain Barrel Program Join the movement to save our waters!

Since 2008, Coca-Cola bottling plants have donated 84,684 syrup ingredient drums to conservation groups, municipalities & schools for rain barrels across 100 communities in the USA and Canada. Coca-Cola Rain Barrel Donation Partnerships

Harvesting Rain 3 By collecting rainwater that normally off a property, rain barrels can Capture free water, saving money on water bills Manage polluted runoff, keeping streams cleaner

4 Harvesting Rain

Local Community Water Stewardship Working with local partners to: Protect source water Build sustainable communities Conserve water & healthy watersheds Educate citizens on water conservation Increase awareness of & engagement in Coca-Cola water stewardship River Network partner testimonies

What is a Watershed? A watershed is the area of land that drains to a particular point along a stream

Cornell University Cooperative Extension Stormwater is rain that did not soak into the soil

Why is Stormwater an environmental issue? Sediment loads that travel into rivers and streams directly impact aquatic species and their habitats as well as water quality AND quantity for humans

Pavement => Increased Flooding and Run-off Paved watersheds lead to runoff as less rainwater can infiltrate back into the ground to replenish rivers and streams as fresh groundwater

IN ATLANTA 57 billion to 133 billion gallons of rainwater that used to soak into the ground annually Enough to serve the average annual household needs of 1.5 million to 3.6 million people Now pour into sewers as polluted runoff as a result of paving over watersheds How Much Lost During Flash Flooding?

U.S. Drought Monitor Classified - Internal use Exceptional drought Historic flooding (1 foot of rain) Moderate-extreme drought Stormwater management to help mitigate impacts of unpredictable weather => droughts & floods NASA Earth Observatory U.S. Drought Monitor

Outdoor Irrigation Largest Water Use

Rain Barrels for Outdoor Watering Free water! Can water during drought restrictions. Environmental benefits/water conservation Convenient access to irrigation source Highly beneficial for plants No chlorine or other treatment chemicals

How to Build a Rain Barrel Video Building the rain barrel Location for rain barrel Height from ground Building a stable base Expanding storage capacity Safety Maintenance

Choose a safe and sensible location for the rain barrel Select a roof area that yields maximum rain collection Consider proximity to plants Verify homeowner’s association covenants Choose a Location

Rain Barrel Stand Use cinder blocks, treated lumber, or buy a rain barrel stand to ensure a safe and stable platform base Position the rain barrel at a proper level for maintenance Gravity Works! Rain barrels should be higher than the ground. 2 FT of height will give you 1lb of water pressure Full rain barrels weigh 480 pounds

Conversion Kit 3 hole saw bits Spigot and rubber washer Diverter hose assembly (Optional - winter gutter hole cover) (Optional - drain hole plug & washer)

Drill 1 ¼” hole 3 inches from the bottom of the drum on the front of the barrel for the spigot. Attach spigot with rubber washer. Drill diverter hole on side of drum near top. Drilling Spigot & Diverter Holes

Choose rain barrel placement site next to a downspout and close to plants that need water. Drill 1 ½” hole for the drain fill (inlet/outlet) hole at the top of the side of the drum that will face the downspout. Attaching Diverter

2 1/8” hole saw (large) Barrel fill hole and downspout hole must be LEVEL Drill 2 1/8” hole in the narrow side of gutter downspout Insert diverter in the hole (with arrow point up).

Use safety glasses and gloves when drilling into metal gutter The FlexiFit ™ diverter advantage Makes installation as easy as 1-2-3 Drill hole in downspout Attach hose (hose can be shortened at cuffs) Insert FlexFit™ Diverter Hole Saws Included!

Painted Rain Barrels for Local Fundraisers & Environmental Events School Projects & Community Outreach Projects

Maintenance Classified - Internal use Protect rain barrel from intense light that can spur algae growth by painting it or covering it with a Coca-Cola “HARVEST RAIN – CONSERVE WATER” barrel wrap Keep debris out using pantyhose footie across diverter cup Winter shut-off is needed in some regions. Unplug diverter hose from gutter downspout & turn barrel upside down Clean interior of barrel with soap or bleach as needed

Expanding Storage Link several rain barrels together as long as they are on solid, level surface at the same elevation.

Rain Barrels Offer Sustainable Outdoor Watering Solution and Tangible, simple way to replenish water to local community watersheds Many thanks to our local community rain barrel program partners and support from:

SAFETY WARNING! Rain Barrel Water is NOT FOR DRINKING
