1 DEVON 6 YEARS OLD – KINDERGARTEN DECEMBER 12 TH, 2014 TYPED BY BECCA OWEN, DICTATED BY DEVON

2 INTRODUCTION When I asked each of these students what they would like to learn this year, they each suggested things they would like to learn how to make. One wanted to learn how to make a butterfly, the other a robot. Because these requests had building in common but little else, I chose to focus on the science aspect of both robots and butterflies. The one who liked butterflies learned about butterfly body parts, and the one who liked robots learned about the parts of a robot and we discussed at length how they work. At the end of these conversations, they each created their own robot or butterfly (respectively) to take home with them. They have each chosen two other areas of their learning that they wanted to display and they chose the color schemes and layouts for their individual PowerPoint. They dictated to me at school what they thought they learned, and I wrote a secondary slide of a brief summary of their learning this semester from my perspective.

3 Before we made the Minecraft king, Devon drew him first. Because of how detailed the picture we were looking at was, he didn’t finish drawing him. He said it was too hard and he couldn’t do it, and that he just wanted to make him. PRACTICE DRAWING

4 I used glitter glue for the silver part. We cut out the black pieces for his body. We cut out the blue pieces for his eyes. We have more glitter my mom will help me put on. WE MADE A MINECRAFT KING

5 What I knew My tv shows have a lot of robots in them. Also cyborgs Robots usually have weapons attached to them. Robots and cyborgs can move very fast and some can fly. What I learned There are a lot of different machines that are like robots. The Minecraft king has a lot of pieces. Robots have a lot of different parts and pieces. It takes a long time to build a robot. ROBOTS (SCIENCE)

6 PARENT INVOLVEMENT Leading into this project, I had a conversation with Devon’s mother about what Devon had decided that he wanted to create and what I would be doing with his learning, and asked her if she had any ideas of things we could use to create his robot. She said she had a few ideas for supplies, and that she would talk to him about it at home and send them with him for us to create our robots in the next several days. She also said she hoped he would enjoy making the robot because he talks so much at home about all of his favorite characters. She sent glitter glue and foam with him to use. After Devon and I worked on our robot for a length of time on December 11th, he told me he wanted to finish it at home with his mom. After school that day, I spoke with his mom and told him he hadn’t finished it, and she said she would work on it with him at home.

7 Devon is very interested in most science-related content. We looked at a variety of different types of robots before we settled on one to create. We learned that robots can perform many different kinds of jobs, and don’t just destroy things on television shows. Through creating his robot, Devon also developed his fine motor skills because there were a lot of small pieces for us to cut and glue. SCIENCE DEVELOPMENT

8 I can count to 200. I know a lot of numbers. I know 1+1=2 and 2+2=3. I know the names of shapes. MATH I wrote all these numbers.

9 Devon went from being able to count to 12 to being able to count to over 100 this semester. He knows the names of many shapes. He can write and identify 1-25+ correctly without using a reference. He can solve basic addition problems. MATH DEVELOPMENT

10 I know a lot of sight words. I know (almost) all my letters I like stories about robots and cyborgs and ninjas. I like to read with my mom at home. I don’t like to read, I like people to read to me. READING

11 Has learned to identify all 26 uppercase letters and 24/26 lowercase letters. Knows 18 consonant sounds. Can now read quietly with a partner or independently. READING & LANGUAGE ARTS DEVELOPMENT
