1
Types of Chemical Reactions
2
Reactants Products Pb(NO 3 ) 2 + 2KI PbI 2 + 2KNO 3
3
In a chemical reaction, matter is not created or destroyed but it is conserved.
4
Synthesis Reactions 2 or more substances combine to form another substance. A + B AB
5
Synthesis Reaction (Combination)
6
Decomposition Reactions One substance breaks down or decomposes into 2 or more simpler substances. ABA + B
7
Decomposition Reaction (Break Down)
8
Single Displacement Reactions One element replaces another in a compound. A + BCAC + B
9
Single Displacement Reaction (1-2 Switch)
10
Double Displacement Reactions When 2 ionic compounds are combined in a solution, a precipitate, water or gas is formed. AB + CDAC + BD
11
Double Replacement Reaction (The Swingers)
12
Combustion Reaction A reaction in which a compound and oxygen burn. Uses oxygen as a reactant. At least one product of the reaction contains oxygen. 2CH 4 + 4O 2 2CO 2 + 4H 2 O
13
Exothermic Vs. Endothermic Energy is given off. Heat may be given off Container may feel hot ¤ Energy is taken in for the reaction to take place. ¤ Heat may be absorbed ¤ Container may feel cold.
