www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Context Key objective of EGI-InSPIRE is “Sustainability” –Financial, organisational, technical and legal –BUT it is also: Instilling confidence in the users that the service will be available for years to come (discussed at eConcertation Event) Offering predictability for how services are provided Optimising effort and resources with more efficient service management EGI provides a variety of services to researchers –However, these services are currently defined as “tasks” in the EGI- InSPIRE DoW –Service management is often tied to the project Needs to become the other way around How can EGI sustain long-term service provision? –It all starts with a Service Portfolio 3 EGI.eu Service Portfolio - EGI CF’13 - Apr 2013 10/04/2013

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Defining a Service A service is something you buy or acquire that provides value on its own Services are also relative to whom they are provided –Car Design is a service, but not to an end user, the car is e.g. Porsche designs cars for VW, while VW provides a car to people –Or Coordination of Operations is a service from EGI.eu to NGIs, but a federated service provision of compute and storage is for the end-user/researcher 4 EGI.eu Service Portfolio - EGI CF’13 - Apr 2013 Simple Right? 10/04/2013

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 EGI.eu Service Analysis EGI.eu provides services known as “Global Tasks” –Directly by staff based in Amsterdam –Outsourced to EGI.eu Participants 5 EGI.eu Service Portfolio - EGI CF’13 - Apr 2013 Global tasks have been evaluated and identified as a service or a supporting activity ITIL Global Task Consultation and support by: 10/04/2013

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Costs and Impact A cost analysis was also conducted based on the service portfolio –Cost breakdown by: Service Category, Service Name and Supporting Activity/Component Maintenance, Operations, Development, Coordination and Support (staff) –Understanding where the costs are is a key component in sustainable service delivery Impact was also assessed by evaluating the impact on the overall infrastructure by not doing the activity –Critical: EGI will end in the short-term –Degradation: EGI will degrade over time –No Growth: EGI will not grow or expand in the future –None: There will be no impact on EGI e.g. activity performed by a partner external to EGI, activity not needed, or can be performed inside another project/activity/organisation) Open discussion and impact refined at Evolving EGI Workshop in Jan –Currently supporting strategic decisions within the EGI Council 10 EGI.eu Service Portfolio - EGI CF’13 - Apr 2013 10/04/2013

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Next Steps Service Management Maturity Assessment –Assessment underway within FedSM project 2 NGIs also evaluating their services and management (FI, PL) –Identify areas of strength and areas of improvement for how services are being managed and processes and procedures defined Need to move away from project based management and scheduling –Many processes and procedures are mature for only for some supporting activities, but not for overall services Future projects should be scheduled around our independent procedures (align or reduce reporting; increase predictability and efficiency) Publish EGI.eu Service Catalogue –Separate services by customer (beneficiary) making value clear Develop EGI Partnership Portfolio (EGI.eu+NGIs+Providers) –What EGI provides as a whole (user-facing services) e.g. data processing, data storage, data management Refine portfolio based on cost/benefit analysis in preparations for H2020 11 EGI.eu Service Portfolio - EGI CF’13 - Apr 2013 10/04/2013

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Summary/Conclusions Defined what is actually a service –Separated out what is delivered and what is done to support delivery Analysed and refined EGI.eu Services –Scaled down and clarified services –Conducted a cost analysis –Evaluated service impact and priorities Provided a foundation for strategic decisions –Understand that not to everything can be provided for everyone –Maximise value to maximise impact to increase future sustainability Will continue to progress on improving service management maturity towards the end of EGI-InSPIRE Opportunity for NGIs to revisit their services –Take advantage of EGI experiences and FedSM support –Material to be made available, training opportunities, potential consultation 12 EGI.eu Service Portfolio - EGI CF’13 - Apr 2013 10/04/2013
