14 Press Release May 2011 MARRIOTTS SCHOOL CELEBRATES EUROPE LINK IN COMENIUS WEEK Marriotts School in Stevenage is celebrating its international link with schools in Europe during Comenius Week by welcoming the visit of Swiss students to the town, as part of their seven-country two-year school linking project. The week (from 2-9 May) celebrates and acknowledges the work of schools taking part in the Comenius Programme, an EU scheme that creates partnerships across Europe and improves education standards. The programme is funded by the European Union and managed in the UK by the British Council. Marriotts School has been working with partner schools in Edinburgh, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland and Ceuta (Spain). Students and teachers from Marriotts will be learning about school and social life in the UK, visiting Cambridge and London, and taking part in a sports tournament during the week to celebrate their European connection. Patrick Marshall, Headteacher said: “The Comenius programme has allowed our school to turn the theory of international linking into reality, by offering our students the chance to meet, talk to and visit their counterparts in our link schools across Europe’. The programme aims to develop knowledge and understanding of different European cultures and languages, and help young people gain skills for their future lives and careers. The programme also helps young people learn more about their own culture and build links within their local community. Head of EU Programmes at the British Council Simon Williams said: “We congratulate Marriotts on the great work they have done through the Comenius programme and wish them continued success. “International school partnerships help to build trust and understanding between different cultures, broaden pupils’ horizons, bring languages and other subjects to life in the classroom, and equip young people with the skills and understanding they need to become global citizens.” For more information on Comenius Week go to: www.britishcouncil.org/comenius-week-2011www.britishcouncil.org/comenius-week-2011 Full information on Marriotts’ Comenius programme can be found on: www.marriotts.sch.herts.uk International Activities www.marriotts.sch.herts.uk www.sussol.eu = Comenius Project website www.sussol.eu
