2 1.Watch a ghost story and observe how it is organised. 2. Write a ghost story from a given opening. 3. Write your own ghost story from beginning to end. 4. Present and summarise your ghost story to the rest of the class. 5. Vote for the best ghost story and explain your choice.

7 CHARACTERISTICS OF A GHOST STORY How is a ghost story organised? The beginning? The plot? The end? What elements are found in a ghost story?

8 WRITING A GHOST STORY Read the different openings and find out: where the scene takes place. who the main characters are. the initial situation. Choose an opening and continue the ghost story.

9 WRITING A GHOST STORY CHECKLIST Check that you have used: the preterit as your narrative tense. complex sentences. link-words and adverbs. descriptions (of places, feelings, …).

10 WRITING A GHOST STORY ORAL FEEDBACK Explain to the rest of the class: which opening you chose and why. (1 mn) the supernatural element you introduced. (1 mn) what happened in your story. (2-3 mns) how your story ends. (1 mn)

11 ON YOUR OWN BEFORE YOU START WRITING Start by deciding: where and when your story takes place. who the main characters are. what your initial (ordinary) situation is. what your supernatural element is.

12 ON YOUR OWN WRITING Pay attention to: how you will present the setting and characters. how you will introduce the supernatural element. how you will create suspense in your plot. creating an unexpected ending. choosing the right title for your story.

13 PLANNING YOUR STORY Story title: what is your story going to be about? WHO? The characters Who is in your story? → Include your main character (s) and other minor characters. WHERE? The setting Where does your story take place? → Describe where your story takes place. WHAT HAPPENS AT FIRST? The initial situation What happens at the beginning of your story? → Present your initial situation. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? The twist What event creates a problem in your story? → Introduce your supernatural element. → What happens to your character(s)? WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? The unravelling What happens after the problem? → Does your character fix the problem? → How do they do this? HOW DOES THE STORY END? The end What happens at the end of your story? → Describe how your story ends. → How do the characters feel?

14 ON YOUR OWN CHECKLIST Check that you have used: the preterit as your narrative tense. complex sentences. link-words, adverbs and adverbial phrases. descriptive passages. stylistic devices (similes, metaphors, …)

15 ON YOUR OWN ORAL FEEDBACK Present to the rest of the class: the setting and the characters (with details). (2 mns) the initial situation (with details). (1 mn) the supernatural element. (1 mn) the plot (with details). (2-3 mns) a passage of the story. (1 mn) how the story ends. (1 mn)
