8 Sassolino One of the most typical liquor of the Province of Modena is the Sassolino, whose name derives from the city of origin: Sassuolo. The star anise used for the preparation of Sassolino is the fruit of Illicium verum Hook, a laurel-like plant native from China.

12 The Ducal Palace is an important early baroque villa. 1634: Architect Bartolomeo Avanzini guided the transformation of the ancient castle into the Este vacation home. The Ducal Palace

13 The Este Family They were rulers of Ferrara (1240–1597) and of Modena (1288–1796) and celebrated patrons of the arts during the Renaissance. Probably of Lombard origin, they took their name from the castle of Este, near Padua. They succeeded to the house of the Guelphs when the original Guelph line died out.

18 TheTerraces The terraces still retain some evidences which bear witness to the fact the residence once suited defensive purposes, since they were obtained cutting the towers that stood at the corners of the structure.

19 Following the French occupation, the Ducal complex was abandoned. In 1941: became State property, entrusted to Military Academy of Modena. Between 1943 and 1945: World War II brought damages to the building, which was also used as a warehouse. In 1970:Began the Restoration.. In 1998: It was opened to the public.

20 Carani's Theatre Carani’s Theatre was built by two important industrials: Eugenio and Mario Carani. It was inaugurated on Christmas’ Eve in 1930.
