3 Professional and Career Development – the website that helps teachers to map their career and professional development Part 1c Introduction to the website: PowerPoint Presentation 1 Slide 3 Professionals Learning and CPD In the current UK Education debate there is a new CPD agenda emerging which emphasises the importance of the learning professional and the role of professional learning.The DfES has announced it wishes to align CPD with both school improvement and performance management for teachers. Key factors in this are: Helping schools build more robust CPD infrastructures and capacity Increasing the awareness and use of CPD and monitoring Impact and outcomes Developing clearer expectations of the knowledge, skills and competencies that teachers should develop in their careers and particularly in their early years

5 Professional and Career Development – the website that helps teachers to map their career and professional development Part 1c Introduction to the website: PowerPoint Presentation 1 Slide 5 CPD Planning for Teachers Personal development planning is defined in the UK as "a structured and supported process undertaken by an individual to reflect upon their own learning, performance and / or achievement and to plan for their personal, educational and career development." Thus, an ePortfolio for personal development planning contains records of learning, performance, and achievement which can be reflected on, and outcomes of that reflection, including plans for future development. This could include a learning ePortfolio, but goes beyond that, as it is often related to professional development and employment, so also possibly used as a presentation ePortfolio. ( IMS ePortfolio Best Practice and Implementation Guide – June 2005)

6 Professional and Career Development – the website that helps teachers to map their career and professional development Part 1c Introduction to the website: PowerPoint Presentation 1 Slide 6 Role of the ePortfolio in Teachers CPD An ePortfolio is a repository of acquired learning, the skills, knowledge and abilities that an individual acquires through learning. These are the formal, non-formal, incidental and accidental learning opportunities that occur both within their everyday workplace experiences and in more targeted learning scenarios. For Teachers ePortfolios need to be portable to ensure continuity both on an educational institution level and to ensure the integration of evidence about learning between institutions. From an individual perspective, information about a person's learning, performance and achievement, as recorded in an ePortfolio, need to operate across institutions and countries throughout their lifetime.

The website provides the ‘big picture’ It is set in the national framework It offers easy links to all other websites which provide sources of information and support for the profession It provides an on-line ePortfolio and CV functionality

The Pathways section shows the possible career pathways in the profession and the planning needed to pursue these provides real examples of a range of options and illustrates the different contributions that people can make in a variety of roles - enabling teachers to draw on the experience of others shows the activities and experiences, formal and informal, chosen by teachers in managing their CPD shows that many teachers make a deliberate decision to develop a career in the classroom demonstrates the passion and enthusiasm that individuals have for the job while being well aware of its challenges.

The Pointers section identifies the key experiences and activities, formal and informal, that teachers point to as contributing factors to their own career and professional development shows how teachers have been proactive, courageous and prepared to take risks for their beliefs and values offers key questions to prompt teachers to reflect on how they might be proactive in taking responsibility for their careers and continuing professional development. Encourages reflection on the skills of teaching and learning and consideration of strategies for improvement
