1 American Sign Language: A Beginner’s Tutorial Welcome! This tutorial is a fast and easy way to learn some basic American Sign Language (ASL) communication skills. 3 ASL: A Beginner’s Tutorial > Lessons > Sentences Now that you have mastered some vocabulary words, it’s time to put them into sentences. ASL is different from most spoken languages because there is no verb “to be”; instead, it is simply implied. Therefore, in order to say, “I am sad,” you only have to sign “I” and “sad.” Therefore, for this lesson, we will learn the basic pronouns.
