2 What was university life like in medieval Europe? What role did education and literature play in medieval life? AIM:

3 1100s - trade within Europe became a reliable food source Many groups of people required educated members Schools created near cathedrals to educate members of the clergy. Famous schools of the time: 900s - Solerno, Italy Oxford University in England was founded in 1096. MEDIEVAL UNIVERSITIES EMERGE

5 Few comforts and rigorous studies. Program of studies - studied seven Liberal Arts. Arithmetic, music, grammar, geometry, astronomy, logic, rhetoric (debate) Earning degrees took many years Women and education: Women couldn't attend universities. Some women were educated in convents Men thought it odd to be educated, they thought they should tend to children and the household STUDENT LIFE

6 This picture shows how women may have tended to the household but they also were able to get education.

7 Many of these ideas originated in Greece, but were lost after the fall of Rome. Much of this knowledge came from Muslim scholars. The Christians struggled with many of these ideas. o Scholasticism was created to use reason to support Christian beliefs. In addition to philosophical works, scientific works also reached Europe. They also adopted Hindu-Arabic Numerals. EUROPEANS ACQUIRE "NEW" LEARNING

8 This shows the order of how the number system today originated. It also shows the relationship between the Hindu, Arabic, and medieval number systems.

9 These included epics and tales of the common people. Epics - stories of heroes in poem form People loved to hear stories of heroes. Epics were preformed as songs by minstrels. One popular epic was The Song of Roland. One of the most famous poems of the time is Dante's Divine Comedy. Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales was also a popular work. MEDIEVAL LITERATURE
