5 5Info-Tech Research Group Vendor Landscape: Enterprise BI Market Overview How it got here Where it’s going As the market evolves, capabilities that were once cutting edge become default and new functionality becomes differentiating. Strong visualizations have become a Table Stakes capability and should no longer be used to differentiate solutions. Instead focus on capabilities to position your organization for the future such as location and social media analytics. When the term “Business Intelligence” was coined in the late 1950s, the goal was to increase an organization’s bottom line through data-driven decision making. However, low adoption of organization-wide BI became problematic as vendors targeted business leaders, but did not engage them. Adoption rates of BI have gradually increased since then with the development of self-serve functionalities, but are still limited by: o Poor performance o Limited data access o Software complexity o Lack of integration with Office suite To date, BI vendors have expanded feature functionalities to increase the ease of use of their tools. As a result, organizations have recognized increased rates of adoption. For further help in developing an appropriate BI strategy, see Info-Tech’s solution sets on Data Integration, Data Warehouse, and BI Strategy.Data IntegrationData WarehouseBI Strategy Accurately extracting usable data from unstructured sources, such as social media platforms, will become a competitive necessity for large enterprises. Vendors that do not already provide Big Data support out of the box will develop this functionality soon. Despite massive interest in self-serve BI, there will be a shift in how the business evaluates the quality of self- serve BI tools. Business decision makers must collaborate with IT and ensure accurate and appropriate data is accessed by end users through their organization’s BI tool. BI technologies hold a large amount of confidential company data and with the explosion of mobile BI, vendors will be required to provide robust security strategies to protect this data. Business users will continue to ask for more complex analysis capabilities in their BI tools, while maintaining a high ease of use and ever improving visualizations.

8 8Info-Tech Research Group Vendor Landscape: Enterprise BI What is a Value Score? The Info-Tech Enterprise BI Value Index The Value Score indexes each vendor’s product offering and business strength relative to its price point. It does not indicate vendor ranking. Vendors that score high offer more bang-for- the-buck (e.g. features, usability, stability, etc.) than the average vendor, while the inverse is true for those that score lower. Price-conscious enterprises may wish to give the Value Score more consideration than those who are more focused on specific vendor/product attributes. Champion For an explanation of how the Info-Tech Value Index is calculated, see Information Presentation – Value Index in the Appendix.Information Presentation – Value Index For an explanation of how Price is determined, see Information Presentation – Price Evaluation in the Appendix.Information Presentation – Price Evaluation *The vendor declined to provide pricing and publically available pricing could not be found On a relative basis, Microsoft maintained the highest Info-Tech Value Score TM of the vendor group. 9 9Info-Tech Research Group Vendor Landscape: Enterprise BI Table Stakes represent the minimum standard; without these, a product doesn’t even get reviewed If Table Stakes are all you need from your BI solution, the only true differentiator for the organization is price. Otherwise, dig deeper to find the best price to value for your needs. The products assessed in this Vendor Landscape TM meet, at the very least, the requirements outlined as Table Stakes.
