This presentation will show you how to use your graphing calculator. You will: Learn how to care for your calculator Understand basic functions Learn how to use the Algebraic keys Learn how to graph linear functions and quadratics Be able to apply what you’ve learned to the problems in your textbook

4 Your calculator has buttons for many different functions.

5 It has a screen large enough to display graphs.

6 It uses 4 AAA batteries

7 And it comes with a protective cover.

8 Handle With Care

9 Your calculator is costly, so handle it with care

10 When not in use, always keep it covered.

11 Don’t drop it!

12 Keep away from pets

13 Watch out for thieves!

14 And don’t get it wet!

15 Always take care of your calculator, especially if it is not yours.

16 The Keypad Number Keys Arithmetic Keys – for basic operations (     ) Arrow Keys – moves the cursor in four directions     Graphing Keys – accesses graphing functions Editing Keys – edits expressions and values Scientific Calculator Keys Advanced Function Keys- displays menus for advanced functions

18 On/Off Key  Located in the lower left corner
Turns on the calculator by pressing  When the calculator is first turned on, you will see a blinking cursor Turns off the calculator by pressing  then 

19 Clear Key  Erases the screen

20 Enter Key  Located at the bottom right corner Evaluates an expression
Executes an instruction Selects a menu item

21 2nd Key  Located at the top left corner
Selects the function shown above each key

22 Mode Key  Located at the top center
Determines how what is entered is interpreted Determines how answers are displayed You must press to change a mode setting.

23 Common Algebraic Keys X-squared  Symbols  Carrot  Parentheses 

24 Negation Key  Located in the lower right corner
Makes a value or expression negative Can not be used for subtraction. An error message will appear.

26 Resetting your calculator
Resetting your calculator changes everything back to the default (original) settings. If you are using a school calculator in class, you may need to reset the calculator to erase the settings of the previous user. If you’ve been using your own calculator for games or have changed the settings, you may need to reset your calculator.

Press  then  to select the Memory menu.

Press  or use the arrow keys to select Reset.
