Welcome ! Math Lab 2014-2014

Ms. Snyder

Education: Highly qualified, Certified Teacher Bachelor of Science Nicholls State University Experience: 26 years

What you will NOT do in Math Lab You will NOT memorize formulas or rules…you will create them. The only thing you memorize is basic math facts. (Multiplication, Division, Add, Subtract) You will NOT just try to copy the examples to get answers…answers are not as important as the process used to get them. You will NOT use tricks or shortcuts unless you can explain WHY they work.

What will we do in Math Lab? Hands-on One-on-one Small group work Apply math to real life applications Strive to truly understand the TEKS Accelerated Math

What is Accelerated Math? Accelerated Math gives : Tailored daily assignments. Unlimited practice assignments created just for you. Immediate scoring. Transfer the practice sheet answers to a “scantron” and scan it, instantly and automatically scores all work.

What is Accelerated Math? Individual diagnosis. A report is printed, showing the score, problems missed and objectives that need more practice. Personal guided conference. Using the report from the software and work shown on the student’s practice sheet, the teacher can quickly zero in on specific problem areas to fix them!

What is Accelerated Math? Automatic printing of next assignment. The program prints the student’s next practice sheet—adjusted to previous results—with additional practice on objectives that need more work and new objectives to replace those mastered.

Star Math Test Student takes the test. Test questions will change based on your answer. If the answer is correct, you get to try one a little harder. We are trying to find out what you know and where you need help. We get results. When testing is complete, STAR Math provides detailed reports to help identify where you need individual help. We make data-driven decisions. STAR Math makes it easy to provide instruction at the appropriate level of challenge for each student using Accelerated Math.

Do you need to memorize a lot of facts, rules and formulas to be good at math? Memorizing procedures is not as effective as understanding concepts. Applying thinking skills and creative thought leads to a better understanding of math.

The most important aspect to learning math is understanding. Ask yourself after solving a math problem: are you applying a series of memorized steps, or do you really 'understand' how and why the procedure works.

What is my goal? To produce students who can use math to solve problems in the “Real World.”...and

Math has never been more important, technology demands that we work smarter and have stronger problem solving skills. Experts suggest that in the next 5-7 years there will be twice as much math as there is today. There are many reasons to learn math and it's never too late to start !

It is my goal that EVERY one of my students passes the State test All of my students should be prepared for success in high school, college, and life.
