CATALYST What is Homeostasis? Describe at least 2 ways in which the city of Baton Rouge maintains homeostasis

EXCRETORY SYSTEM

Main Parts of Excretory System Lungs Skin Kidneys Liver Bladder

Lungs RELEASE CO 2, HEAT, AND H 2 O

SKIN EXCRETES HEAT, WATER AND SALT

KIDNEYS Excrete waste products from blood Removes urea, excess water and other wastes and passes to ureter.

Bladder Sac that collects urine

Liver Secondary Organ of Excretion Produces bile which is important in fat digestion and sends matter to large intestine.

CATALYST What is Homeostasis? Name 3 ways in which we filter materials to make our lives more comfortable and safer.

KIDNEYS Kidneys play 3 important roles in maintaining homeostasis. Remove waste products from the blood Maintain blood pH Regulate the water content of the blood and, therefore, blood volume

Nephrons Nephrons are the functional units of the kidneys Kidneys are made of nephrons

Structure of the Kidney Blood enters the nephrons, where impurities are filtered out and emptied into the collecting duct. The purified blood leaves the nephron through the renal vein.

Filtration is passing a liquid or a gas through a filter. Filtration of blood takes place in the glomerulus Reabsorption is the process in which liquid is taken back into a vessel. Kidneys filter all blood in the body approximately every 45 minutes The mechanism of blood purification involves 2 distinct processes: Filtration and Reabsorption.

Catalyst What are the 3 ways the kidneys maintain homeostasis?

Johnny is having dialysis "I come to the hospital three times a week. Each time, I'm here for five hours or so. I'm used to it now and I know how to help the nurses set things up. I'd rather be playing football or computer games but without dialysis I'd never get a chance to play them."

Question 3a) What type of wave is used to break up kidney stones? b) The previous picture shows Johnny having dialysis. How many hours a week does he spend having dialysis? c) Why does he need dialysis?

Ultrasound (a sound wave that is too high for humans to hear). b) 15 hours a week c) His kidneys don't work. They are not removing waste products from his blood. Without dialysis, these waste products would build up and, being toxic, would eventually kill him
