© 2014 Boise State University11 “All bathtubs use to be white, telephones black and checks green” (Johnson) All students use to sit in desks in a classroom, faculty stood in front lecturing, and courses met for the semester (or quarter) – We are freed from that model – Now we have to make some decisions that we never had to make before

© 2014 Boise State University12 Decisions about Program Operations -Design and inputs Curriculum -Production and outputs

© 2014 Boise State University13 Making Decisions No right and wrong Influences – Clarity – Consistency One program, different delivery methods – EPAS 2015 Blueprints

© 2014 Boise State University14 Key Decisional Areas Non-curricular – Course format – Residency requirement/synchronous sessions – Orientation – Faculty expectations – Quality assurance Curricular decisions – Course template – Syllabus template

© 2014 Boise State University17 Lots of Time Prior to Course Development Meetings with Faculty to decide Involving Deans and the Provost Planning scope with eCampus center 10-step process Developing a budget model State Board approval

© 2014 Boise State University19 Things We Would Do Differently Identify a point person(s) and make this part of workload as soon as decision is made Hire the Online MSW Coordinator earlier in the process Delay the start date – Until more of the courses were finished with production – New EPAS standards announced – Until all course objectives were finalized – New Director in place Would not conduct much of the 10-step process over the summer Facilitate an interdepartmental meeting early on in the decision-making phase

© 2014 Boise State University20 Things We Would Do the Same Make course online development/teaching optional to our faculty Start small (25 admitted to first cohort “Always a work in progress” Course design model: develop, teach, revise Onboarding meetings Partnership with instructional design teams Faculty incentives Operations and 10-Step meetings
