2 Agenda Objective: Students will analyze characterization in the short story through a graphic organizer, in groups. Focus Lesson: Characterization Collaborative Time: Group work on “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker HW: Finish College Essays!

3 1.What's the difference between direct and indirect characterization? 2.Which makes the story come alive- direct or indirect characterization? 3.What is a Stock Character? 4.What is an Epiphany? 5.Name a Stock character or a character who has an epiphany, from any story you have read. Tell me how you know.

4 Direct Characterization: When the character is described by the narrator or by another character Indirect Characterization: When the character is revealed through the acti ons and words, and thoughts of the character. Also through how other char acters relate to or act with. Three Principles of Characterization: 1. Consistent in behavior 2. Words and actions must spring from motivations 3. plausible (believable… lifelike) Flat Character: one or two dimensional- summed up in a sentence or two Round Character: complex and many sided Stock Character: stereotyped Static Character: doesn’t change Dynamic Character: change over the course of the story Epiphany: moment of spiritual insight into life or his/her own circumstances “aha!” moment
