Unit 3: Memory Information Processing

3 steps to information processing Input- info people receive from their senses Central Processing- the storing (in memory) and sorting (by thought) of this information in the brain. Output- Refers to the ideas and actions that result from processing.

2 processes help people narrow sensory inputs to a manageable number Selective attention- Your ability to pick and choose among the various available inputs Example: at a party with loud music but you can focus on a friends voice.

2 processes help people narrow sensory inputs to a manageable number Feature Extraction- involves locating the outstanding characteristics of incoming information to decide on which aspects of the selected channel you will focus on. Example: identifying the make of a car Example: distinguishing faces from one another and at the same time seeing resemblences.

Storing information Memory- the storage of inputs

3 types of memory Sensory storage- hold information for only a second or so (0-1 seconds) after the initial reception of a stimulus

3 types of memory Short Term memory- memory that is limited in capacity to about seven items and in duration by the subject’s active rehearsal (keeps info in mind as long as you repeat it)

3 types of memory Long Term memory- info storage that has unlimited capacity and often may last indefinitely
