Agriculture =the production of food and goods through the use of farming The Farmer = The Producer What does the Producer produce? Commodities! Commodities are processed and turned into _______________ Products! (agri = field, culture = to grow) Review!

“The Food and Fiber System” Agriculture in Berks County meat, fruits/veggies, grainsWool, cotton The System = Everything involved to get food and fiber (the commodities) to the consumer. The system starts with seed and ends with supper. += Commodities What was the answer to the riddle on Page 9? Agriculture is… more than farming.

The Food and Fiber System There are 3 steps in the system to get from seed to supper: 1. The Farm Supply Store = where the farmer shops for supplies, tools, seed, equipment, etc.

The Food and Fiber System There are 3 steps in the system to get from seed to supper: 2. Production Farming = The Producer or Farmer who produces the commodities. I’m the Producer. I shop at the Farm Supply Store.

Go Berks County Producers! Animal Commodities Hogs…………#5 Dairy…………#5 Beef cattle…..#4 Egg layers…..#2 Plant Commodities Wheat……...#5 Hay………....#3 Soybeans….#3 Corn………..#2 There are 67 Counties in PA. How does Berks County rank in Agriculture? Way to Go Berks Producers!

Bankers are also a part of the Farm Supply segment (step 1) Sometimes the Producer needs to purchase items from the Farm Supply Store but he doesn’t have enough money. The Producer borrows money from the Banker. I’ll loan you money but you must pay me back on time.

The Food and Fiber System Remember: Three steps to get from seed to supper: 1.Farm Supply Store and the Banker 2.Producer/Farmer 3. Processing and Marketing = This is the step that… Processes commodities Moves commodities and products Packages products Sells products Step #3 employs the most people in The Food and Fiber System.

Where to the packaged products go to be sold? I’m going to make supper.

The three steps involved are: 1.Farm Supply Stores and Bankers 2.Production farming (producers/farmers) 3.Processing and Marketing We just went from seed to supper by following The Berks County Food and Fiber System! Now do you know someone who works in Agriculture?
