2 Dr. Josef Menegele Dr. Josef Mengele was born in Germany on March 16, 1911. Mengele studied classes at Munich University and received his license to practice medicine at Frankfurt University in 1938. He served in an army, lead by the Fuhrer or leader named Adolf Hitler, called the S.S. from 1940 to 1942. Menegele got stationed to do experiments at the most harshest concentration camp called Auschwitz. Mengele would do human experiments on the prisoners of Auschwitz. Most victims of his experiments were children and especially twins. Mengele fled to South America on the summer of 1949. He drowned while swimming with friends on February 1979. 4 Auschwitz During the Holocaust, Germany prison like places called concentration camps. They were like big cages and they would put their prisoners into it to either participate in experiments, work, or die on the spot. If u did not die immediately, you would die eventually. The most harshest concentration camp during the Holocaust was called Auschwitz. Auschwitz opened on April 27, 1940 in Poland. When prisoners arrived, week prisoners were gassed and the others were sent to quarantine were you would be shaved and prepared for whatever work you would have to do. Some prisoners were called “muselmann” because they were so week that they couldn’t even move anymore. Prisoners of Auschwitz wished they were dead. Auschwitz. 6 Heinrich Müller Heinrich Muller was born in 1900. He joined the Munich police when he was 19. Five years later he married Sophie Dishner. In 1934 Muller got promoted as the head of the department 2 in the Gestapo. Eleven years later, Hitler gave orders to round up all of the Jews. Muller round up hundreds of Jews and sent them to concentration camps to be killed. Muller was wanted during world war 2 and escapes Germany unharmed. 8 Kristallnacht In 1935, German leader, Adolf Hitler passed Nuremburg laws making anti- Semitism official. Jews were getting more and more segregated. Jews were forbidden to marry non-Jews. Schools were expelling Jewish students and they had passports with the letter J for Jew. Kristallnacht took place on the night of November 9,1938. Anti Jewish riots formed all over Germany. All Jewish stores and businesses were wrecked, burned, and completely destroyed. When the riots were over, the Gestapo, or German police, round up the jews and sent them to the concentration camps.
