Do now Discussion: Why do you think meteorologists use weather instruments? Teaching Point: “To make connections between weather instruments and their function.”

Measuring Temperature Thermometer- used to measure the temperature of liquids and gases. TP: “To make connections between weather instruments and their function.” As the liquid in the thermometer heats up, it expands and rises up the glass tube

Measuring Air Pressure Barometer- used to measure air pressure in millibars or inches of mercury Rising air pressure = drier air and clearer skies Falling air pressure = moister air and cloudier skies TP: “To make connections between weather instruments and their function.”

Old School Air Pressure Device TP: “To make connections between weather instruments and their function.”

Measuring Air Speed Anemometer- used to measure wind speed, measured in knots As the cups catch the wind, the device spins and the wind speed is measured TP: “To make connections between weather instruments and their function.”

Measuring Precipitation Rain Gauge- used to measure the amount of liquid precipitation TP: “To make connections between weather instruments and their function.”

Measuring Wind Direction Wind Vane- measures the direction of the wind (North, South, East, West; and the in-betweens!) TP: “To make connections between weather instruments and their function.”

Measuring Wind Direction Sling Psychrometer- measures the percent (%) relative humidity in the air. Wet Bulb Dry Bulb TP: “To make connections between weather instruments and their function.”

Mid-Lesson Assessment Take out your own Plicker Card. You should all have a number assigned to you. When you see the answer you think is correct, turn your card so the multiple choice answer letter of your choice is facing up Wait until the entire class is done, and do not change your answer based on others! TP: “To connect atmospheric convection currents around the globe.”

Mid-Lesson Assessment 1.Which weather variable can be determined by using a Psychrometer? a. barometric pressure b. cloud cover c. relative humidity d. wind speed TP: “To connect atmospheric convection currents around the globe.”

Mid-Lesson Assessment 2.Which weather variable is measured by this instrument? a. wind speed b. precipitation c. cloud cover d. air pressure TP: “To connect atmospheric convection currents around the globe.”

Do you think our ancestors were able to predict the weather without the use of instruments? How might have they done that? Intellectual Engagement TP: “To make connections between weather instruments and their function.”

Instructions: Using what we just learned about weather instruments… Task A- create a daily weather forecast using at least three of the weather instruments. Task B- create a weekly weather forecast using all of the weather instruments. Task C- create a weekend weather forecast using as many instruments as you can. Flexible Group- take out your portfolio and meet me in the back of the room at my desk. Class Activity- Instruments TP: “To make connections between weather instruments and their function.”

Lesson Summary In your tables of four, go back into your notes and consider what we have just learned today, and then… 1. Identify three (3) important concepts we learned today 2. Place those the three in order from the most important concept to least important. TP: “To make connections between weather instruments and their function.”
