3 Reasoning of Significance Tests  Significance Test: a formal procedure for comparing observed data with a hypothesis whose truth we want to assess  In plain English, an outcome that would rarely happen if a claim were true is good evidence that the claim is not true.  Hypothesis: A statement about the parameters in a population or model.  The results of a test are expressed in terms of probability that measures how well the data and the hypothesis agree.
