2 Session 3.2.3 Holistic Transition: the journey from new student to confident graduate Tikus Little and Lorraine Wilson, University of Stirling

3 The presentation will cover the transition ‘staging posts’ integrated into overall programme design within the LLB and BA Law programmes at the University of Stirling. The design reflects that this is a transformational journey undertaken by students to reach the goal of becoming confident graduates, equipped with the Graduate Attributes required for the 21 st Century.

5 2 nd Year – Commercial Awareness Module Credit bearing module Professional socialisation Team working, networking, business planning, marketing, finance, IT. Career planning homework Guest lectures Reflective practice

6 2 nd Year – Moving on up! Big step change into 3 rd year  Different lecture/seminar structure  Reading lists  Fewer problem questions  Analysis, synthesis and evaluation Honours choices

7 3 rd year – Stirling University Graduate Attributes Scholarly and skilled within and between disciplines Intellectually curious and research minded Committed to personal and professional development Engaged individuals with a global perspective Picked up in the core module Law Research Methods

8 Law Work Placement Module “I have found this placement more useful than I thought it would be. It is definitely the most useful module I have done during my university life and would recommend as many students as possible do it. It has taught me so many new things and made me think and do so many things which I hope will benefit me in the future”. bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice for both LLB and BA in Law students. 30 hours in workplace CV building/enhancement Class-based tuition – presentation skills, reflective writing practice and workplace skills Academic rigour? 9 4 th year – Final Year Conference and Dissertations Final Year Conference kick starts the year Dissertation and poster process Dissertation reflective practice “Having to write a dissertation has without doubt been the most challenging, difficult and rewarding event of my University life.” A “The dissertation process has been a crucial opportunity in allowing me to develop my independent learning.
