2 The Flu ► What is it? Respiratory Infection caused by influenza virus. 3 Types: A, B, C Hundreds of Strains of each. ► What is a virus? A non-living organism that needs a host to replicate. Viruses can live in any animal. Some can jump from one animal species to another.

3 Virus or Bacteria ► Virus Can only replicate inside another living cell. Do not respond to Antibiotics. ► Bacteria Single celled organisms that live everywhere. Some cause disease. Respond to Antibiotics.

4 Who gets it? ► 5-20% of Americans each year. ► 200,000 must be hospitalized (US) ► 30,000 die as a result (US) ► 500,000 die worldwide

7 Our Bodies Fight! ► The Immune Systems fights all foreign “invaders” ► White Blood Cells Produce “Antibodies” ► Proteins that bind with viruses so they cannot enter our cells

9 Flu Prevention ► Wash your hands!!!! ► Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze ► Get lots of rest ► Eat healthy food

10 Flu Vaccine 1. Scientists decide which 3 strains will be active next winter 2. Inject fertilized chicken eggs with different strains 3. Virus Replicates itself inside the eggs 4. Virus rich egg whites are taken out and then sterilized 5. Dead virus cells are then injected as the “flu shot.”
