Getting the Round Started The teams will seat themselves in circles on the floor. Count students on each team (no more than 12 per round). Identify the team captains. Toss the coin to see which team starts the round. Winner is Team A. Distribute Team A/Team B Tent cards. May work left to right. Teams will have cards that identify team names. Give each captain two Challenge Cards

The Quiz Process Wait for the announcement to begin the round. Read the first question to Team A. Read the question two times with the book title. “In the book, The Wizard of Oz…who wore the ruby slippers first?” Begin the 20 second time period after the question is read for the second time.
9
The Quiz Process Team A has 20 seconds to answer. Teams will huddle and deliberate. Captain will answer or designate a teammate to answer. Do not stop the stopwatch until 20 seconds have elapsed, even if an incorrect response is given by the first team.
10
The Quiz Process After 20 seconds elapses, Team A must respond. Captain will answer or designate a team member to respond. If the answer is correct, award Team A one point by placing a C on the appropriate score sheet line. If the answer is incorrect, make an X on the score sheet line. Team B now has the opportunity to “steal” the point by answering correctly.
11
Scoring the Point Team B answers correctly – Team B steals the point. Scorekeeper puts a “C” on the appropriate scoresheet line. Team B answers incorrectly. Place an X in the appropriate box on the scoresheet. Neither team answers correctly. Record an X in both boxes. Do not read the correct answer to the question.
12
Scoring the Point For Question 1, Team A was in control of the question and answered incorrectly. Team B answered correctly and stole the point. Coach Time Out Each coach is permitted one sixty-second time out per round to confer with the team. Both coaches may confer with teams during any time out. Scorekeeper should time the sixty seconds after coach presents time out card. Coach Time Out is optional and may or may not be used during the round.
14
Moderator Quick Tips YOU are in control of the room. No paper, pencils, digital devices, food, or drinks. Coin toss to choose Team A/B Count team members Give each team two challenge cards Coaches already have time out cards Wait for announcement to begin round Read question two times Read book title unless title is in the answer Team has 20 seconds to answer Team can challenge when they are IN CONTROL of the question Team must answer BEFORE using a challenge..\..\Desktop\TeamScore sheetpdf.xls
15
Scorekeeper Quick Tips Scoresheets for each round are color coded and in your 3 round packets Team A is the team who wins the toss. Write that team name in the top left box that says “Team A Name.” List district name. Team B information is to be placed in the top right column that says “Team B Name.” List district. List the room number on all scoresheets. Questions are read twice and teams have 20 seconds to confer before responding. Use watch or stopwatch to time 20 seconds. Do not stop watch until 20 seconds has elapsed. Say “time” when time has elapsed. Coach time outs are 60 seconds. Say “time” when time has elapsed
17
The Challenge Challenge Card
18
The Challenge Each team may “Challenge” a question two times during each round. Both team captains receive two Challenge Cards from the moderator before the round begins. Challenges may be used only when a team is “in control” of the question – for Team A that’s odd numbered questions and even numbered questions for Team B. Challenges can be used for any reason but the question must first be asked and answered incorrectly.
19
The Challenge Moderator reads the question to Team A. Team A answers incorrectly. Team A declares intent to use a Challenge Card. Moderator goes to Extra Question Packet. Moderator reads a new question from Extra Questions.
20
The Challenge Team A has twenty seconds to respond. Team A answers correctly or incorrectly. Correct answer gives Team A a “C” on the scoresheet line corresponding to the question number. An incorrect answer allows Team B to steal the point with a correct response.
21
The Challenge Challenge cards can only be used when a team is in control of the question. Teams cannot Challenge another team’s Challenge. A team’s answer must first be ruled incorrect by the moderator before using the Challenge card. Recap: After the new question is read from the Extra Question Packet, just follow the same process as any other question – the other team may steal the point like any other question.
22
Finishing the Round
23
Continue the questioning until both teams have answered twenty questions. Count the total points won (C’s) by each team on the scoresheet. Announce the round winner and distribute blue round winner ribbons to members of the winning team, including any alternates sitting with the coach. If the round is tied, award ribbons to both teams.
24
Finishing the Round Please keep students and spectators in the room until an announcement has been made that the round is concluded. Scorekeeper delivers completed scoresheet to scoring area. Competition moves to the next round when all scoresheets have been delivered to scoring area.
25
A few more hints… Refer any questions to the scoring area at any time. Once the quizzing process has begun, no one may enter or leave the room for any reason. The official guidelines for this competition are available at www.ciu10.org.
