1 Professional Development Description/outcomes: Description/outcomes: Verbal Behavior is a procedure that involves applying principles from Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Skinner’s analysis of Verbal Behavior. Due to its data driven decision making and positive approach, VB is fast becoming a best practice to teaching students within the spectrum of autism and developmental disabilities. Session I: Introduction to Verbal Behavior. Discussion will focus on how to use the student’s own motivation to increase their receptive and expressive language, social responses, and joint attention skills. Additionally, participants will learn how to assess a student’s current level of functioning and how to develop a sequential individualized program using data based decision making. This in-service will provide practice for applying VB knowledge to each participant’s caseload thus supporting skill development across levels of novice or expertise of VB implementation. Session II: Verbal Behavior Implementation The second session will focus on expanding the VB program and reflecting on data obtained from the first session. Focus will be in-depth discussion on prompt-fading and programming for generalization of skills. Issues related to instructional control and teaching and maintaining appropriate behavior for maximizing the students’ time available to learn will be explored. Session III: Verbal Behavior Problem Solving and Coaching. The final session will touch on expanding the VB methodology to future targets and how to continue to use data to make decisions for new targets. Additionally, individual coaching time will be provided to support participant’s specific programming questions and planning. Session III is intended as a trouble-shooting session with some additional information shared – a great way to get all the “bugs worked out”.
