St. Nicholas de Tolentino is a small coastal community with 6 barangays. 5 barangays whose primary livelihood is fishing Helping them acquire a fishing boat and net will certainly provide livelihood for their families.

10 New Matters CTK Parish – EMHC General AssemblyApril 16, 2015 Fisherfolk Poorest of the poor in the country – Poverty incidence of 39.2% (NSCB, July, 2014); still the highest despite reduction from 41.93% in 2009 – Fishing as an occupation of last recourse Confronted with intense competition from illegal commercial fishers – Some have resorted to the use of highly destructive fishing practices to provide food for their families Confronted with the impacts of climate change (storm surge and destruction of coastal and marine ecosystems)

Comprised of men, women and children (fishing as a household enterprise) Artisanal fishers  Own average-sized boats (3-5 gross tons), and use nets and gears of relatively of inferior qualities  Engage in fishing themselves, or with members of their immediate family and/or friends  Employ income sharing as a way to distribute income.

Helping them acquire a fishing boat and net will certainly provide livelihood for their families.

Can be used of open sea with the addition of “katig”. A fiberglass boat will cost 3-4 times as much as a boat made of wood but may last 15-20 years. (Not of open sea water)
