3 Sustainable Procurement Sustainability refers to the physical development and institutional operating practices that meet the needs of present users without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, particularly with regard to use and waste of natural resources. Sustainable practices support ecological, human and economic health and vitality. Sustainability presumes that resources are finite and should be used conservatively and wisely with a view to long-term priorities and consequences of the ways in which resources are used.

4 What is Cal Poly doing? Sustainable Cleaning Products Custodial Services now uses “Green Seal Certified” products Waste Management 28% of waste diverted from landfill 93% of collection fleet meets CARB diesel standards and 15% of fleet are NGV

5 What is Cal Poly doing? Recycled paper Campus using 30% recycled content copy paper for the past 5+ years Using 100% recycled content paper in some cases. Use of FSC certified paper and soy based inks in printing specs

6 What is Cal Poly doing? Recycled toner cartridges Incorporated recycled printer cartridges into the Office Max ordering system (Disable Veteran Business Enterprise supplier used) Used toner cartridge recover program on campus via Office Max pick up system Recycled / sustainable content program Focus on furniture suppliers that provide high recycle content furniture (plastics & steel) Use FSC wood furniture and recycled steel furniture. Recycling of used batteries campus wide program

7 What is Cal Poly doing? Energy efficient vehicles Goal of 25% of fleet to be energy efficient - Electric, bio-diesel, E-85 E-Surplus Diverted 121.25 tons from the landfill Sustainable Specifications Equipment = Energy Star Recycled content requirements DVBE and Small Business participation requirements FSC certified papers and wood products Avoid hazardous chemical use

8 What is Cal Poly doing? Solar Power projects Engineering building incorporated solar panels on roof Solar electric charging station for vehicles Energy Conservation Projects PIER (Public Interest Energy Research) projects –Install monitoring equipment on buildings to analyze and change energy use ESCO (Energy Services Co.) projects –Retrofit lights, mechanical systems, heat / cooling

9 What is Cal Poly doing? Document Imaging HR and AP using with Procurement next –Savings in paper, filing, storage, & clerical activity Electronic PO’s Electronic storage and transmitting of PO’s –Saving paper, filing, storage, postage, & time

10 What is Cal Poly doing? Active LEED implementation Initiative to achieve certification on existing buildings (LEED EB) –Faculty North, Build #25 in-process of EB certification CSU sustainability program for new construction –PCV will be LEED certified upon completion –CSU Design Standards incorporate sustainable practices Campus Housing Bella Montana – 69 unit faculty/staff housing on campus –bike, walk, or take public transportation to work
