Aligning Your Tithe with Partner Mission Interests AIM Conference, October 24, 2013 Dave Tirsell, Macomb Co. HfH

My Experience with Global Village

* Energize your affiliate * Build relationships * Recruit new volunteers * Develop leaders * Learn about global housing needs * Attract new sponsors * Grow your Tithe “Follow your Tithe with Global Village” “ Awaken our hearts to understand how our neighbors include all of humanity, not just those whose lawns border ours.”

* What kind of stories do you tell? * Is your only contact when you need volunteers? * Perhaps a request for funding? * Looking for a way to develop a relationship? * What do you really know about that faith group? * Easier to turn a moving ship, than start one moving that is tied to the dock. “Home is where your story begins.”

* We support mission and aid work already in ….. Ghana, Thailand, Guatemala, Brazil, Gulf Coast * We send teams to other nations regularly. * We wish we could find ways to have our members experience another culture. * Those we have invested in for travel come back on fire for our church and our mission efforts. * We have a special interest in certain issues – water, health, the marginalized, children, malaria…. The Irish writer George Moore said: “A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.”

* After 3 years of teams sent after Hurricane Katrina, we discovered our local affiliate. * I did not know that Habitat had a global reach. * We provide volunteers but wished we could do more. * We don’t have a lot of time or energy to promote a lot of different causes. * Habitat is more expensive to travel with sometimes. Home is the family—the life, the love, the associations... the excitement of future. Alaska

* Romania * Bangladesh * Guatemala * El Salvador * Gulf Coast * …… “Home is where we find refuge from the difficulties of life and peace to relax.” China Ghana Philippines

* Usually a yearly Board of Directors decision * Can be multiple locations * Global Impact Fund for 10%? Haiti Madagascar South Africa Indonesia

* New neighbors in Comanesti * Four new families just moved in next door. But these aren’t just any families, and this isn’t just any “next door.” These are Habitat Romania families who worked hard to raise the walls of their own homes. And this “next door” is an apartment building built by volunteer hands and hearts, which stands proudly next to five other apartment buildings just like it. Welcome to Plopilor Street and welcome to the Bejan, Paduret, Rosu, and Tanase families! * Four more families join the Habitat Comanesti community on Plopilor Street * Habitat for Humanity Comanesti officially launched this project in May 2012 with the goal of building four apartments in Moinesti, on Plopilor Street where another 20 Habitat families already live. The four families selected for these homes never thought home ownership was possible, much less that their homes could be built in only six months. However in November 2012, thanks to the dedication and hard work of local and international volunteers as well as the family members themselves, dreams became a reality for these four families. More than 150 volunteers came to help from Northern Ireland, UK, Canada, Ireland, USA, Switzerland and Romania. These amazing volunteers dedicated time, money and heart to help four families have a decent place to live.

* Have a mission team already going to…? * Come alongside Habitat there. * Fuel efficient stoves * Water filtration or well projects * School support * Orphan support * Don’t impose if there are no funds or little planning involved.

* Start praying * Find a leader or get one trained * Choose a country * Choose approximate timing and size of group * Open or closed team? * Put in a proposal * Consider Thrivent Builds Worldwide as well
