Bellwork 1-6-2016 Answer on a sheet of notebook paper! What would happen to a factory if its power were shut off or its supply of raw materials never arrived? What would happen if the factory couldn’t get rid of its garbage? Look at page 78!

Objectives Explain how materials move through simple diffusion. (SPI 0707.1.5) Students will be able to analyze how plant and animal cells are organized to carry on the processes of life.

Demonstrations Aerosol Spray Demo Raise your hand as soon as you can smell the room spray. How did the scent move from one side of the room to the other side? Soap bubbles have properties, such as flexibility, that are similar to cell membranes. Bubble Video What causes the bubble to expand and then pop?

Group Roles Desk A- Time Keeper Desk B- Table Manager (make sure lab tables are staying clean and organized) Desk C- Task Force (encourage everyone to stay on task) Desk D- Errand Runner (this person will get any supplies; ask the teacher a question; etc.) If your group has one of these desks empty, then you need to decide who will take on two jobs.

47. Diffusion Lab 1.Fill beaker halfway with water. Teacher will add 20 drops of iodine to the water. 2.CAREFULLY add 50 ml of water in the bag of cornstarch, keeping solution in the corner of the bag. Seal the bag. Move the corner of the bag between your fingers to mix the cornstarch and water together. 3.Place the bag in the beaker and wait. 4.Check the bag and record your observations after 5, 10, and 15 minutes. (Time keeper needs to use a timer to track this.) 1.5 Minutes- Write observations in detail 2.10 Minutes- write observations and any changes you've noticed. 3.15 Minutes- write observations and any changes you've noticed. 5.While you are waiting, use pgs. 78-81 to define the 6 words on your lab sheet.

Diffusion Lab Questions- Answer in your notebook below your observations.  The plastic bag is semipermeable to which substance?  Why did the iodine enter the bag?  Why didn’t the starch enter the beaker?  How is the plastic bag like the cell membrane?  What is the definition of the word “diffusion”?

Egg Osmosis Lab Set-Up The eggs have been put in vinegar to dissolve the shell. Do you think that the shell is the cell membrane?

Exit Ticket- Answer on your Post-It Note * Based off of our experiments today, how would you define diffusion? We will discuss diffusion further tomorrow. * Draw a picture that you think shows the action of diffusion.
