Advantages Organization, logic, analysis, and creativity Discovery and documentation of your expertise Closure – free to build and move on to next technical subject Sense of accomplishment Contribution to body of knowledge Inside and outside recognition Career and business opportunities

Steps Submit a rough outline with dates for draft of each chapter Last chapter must be sent for review by April to make Expo Give overview of subject material and audience –“The approach is generic but classified per industry (biopharmaceutical, brewing, biochemical, and bio-fuel) and cell type (fungi, yeast, bacterial, and animal). The book assumes the reader has been in a plant and a control room and understands basic terminology but does not have a background in process control. It will have embedded insights.” Sign contract (make sure you retain rights to use material) Send out each chapter to ISA for technical review Agree or make case to disagree (you have final say) –Most comments are easy to incorporate by a simple rewording

Steps Send final drafts with comments addressed to ISA by March Review copy editing for changes to intended meaning Send copy edited with corrections to ISA by April Review page proofs for corrections, layout, equations, figures Send page proofs to ISA with only changes to address goofs Review final page proofs (quick check for goofs)

What Works for Me Think that you are trying to say what is most important about a subject to a good friend and ping pong between the left and right side of brain –I listen to rock with headphones to inspire me and keep left side in play Like anything, you get better as you go along Just get started and get a stream of ideas out Do figures last so it doesn’t interfere with flow Start each paragraph with introductory sentence Keep sentences short Explain each point in detail Define nomenclature and engineering units for equations Give assumptions and offer examples Don’t obsess about wording – this is the ISA copy editors job Get associates in your field and related field to proof read text Double check equations and figures

Summary Get started at least one year before ISA Expo Submit drafts of chapters individually Don’t get caught up in comments or wording Get associates to review drafts, copy editing, and page proofs Focus on what is important and your experience Get ideas down clearly and let ISA improve wording Give out complementary copies to key people at key times Have fun!
