The Lord our Banner Jehovah Nissi - Exodus 15:5-7

Only a few weeks have passed since God revealed Himself to Israel at the waters of Marah as Jehovah-Rophe.

We now come to Rephidim. Here is the place where Moses strikes the rock and fights the first of their human enemies: The Amalekites

I. Moses’ rod, symbol of the Banner of God, brings Victory

A. The rod of Moses was God’s banner. It stood for His cause, His battle.

B. The rod was the symbol and pledge of Jehovah’s presence and power.

C. The lesson is that the battle is God’s, symbolized by the rod of God being present over the battle.

II. Without Jehovah-Nissi there is no victory

A. Israel is smitten by the Amalekites when they go to battle against God’s will (Numbers 14:42-45)

B. Because the Israelites were not finished battling the Amalekites, they needed to know Jehovah-Nissi

C. Only when God’s presence and strength are with us can we battle purposefully (Ex. 17:11 /Num. 14:44)

III. The application to believers today

A. The battle represents the spiritual warfare of the Christian (Ex. 17:9 / Eph. 6:12)

B. Every Christian who is spiritually mature is to be actively and willingly engaged in spiritual warfare (Ex. 17:10 / 2 Cor. 10:4 / I Tim. 1:18)

C. The rod (the banner) was a symbol of Jesus Christ Himself and His cross (Isaiah 11:1,10; 59:19)
