Future Earth workshop – Mexico City Introduction Breakout session 1: Building a regional vision for Future Earth Group 1

Kirsten Appendini (chair) Roberto Sánchez Jakob Rhyner Roberto P. Guimarães Astrid Puentes Lilliam Álvarez Susana Camargo Vieira Arturo J. Martínez German Poveda Giovana Espindola Pablo Chacon Héctor Sámano Rocha Andrea Lampis Rita Torres Pascacio Omar Muller Anne-Sophie Stevance Participants

Aims: Value addition to current activities Achieve integration of the scientific community (build a vocabulary to bridge disciplinary cultures, etc.) Facilitate dialogue with the stakeholders including policy makers and convince them of the importance of GEC challenges Promote the commitment of local scientists to the goals of Future Earth Foster better understanding ofthe Earth system rather than the impacts Develop a more nuanced vision of stakeholders (including assymetry of powers, conflicts between stakeholder groups) 1. What would success look like for Future Earth in the LAC region? What would success indicators be?

Aims: Understand driving forces of decision-making (ex: choices of consumption) Help establish sustainability indicators for the LAC at the relevant scales (human development, economy, technological progress, environment, etc.) 1. What would success look like for Future Earth in the LAC region? What would success indicators be?

Indicators: Number of new disciplines incorporated Engagement of different sectors and new alliances created Have a communication strategy in each project within Future Earth (how to reach out to policy, business, etc.) Looking back after 10 years, identify solutions Future Earth has generated on the ground Dissemination of scientific information and impacts on decision-making Number of young scientists trained on sustainability and number who have returned to work in the region to apply their knowledge (job opportunities) 1. What would success look like for Future Earth in the LAC region? What would success indicators be?

Priorities to be taken on by Future Earth: Need to create a critical mass of scientists to do this new research for sustainability Need to be anti-systemic = distinguish which are the systemic (not sustainable) and anti-systemic stakeholders (who can drive the transition to global sustainability) Understanding of social dynamics which foster global sustainability and what are the social dynamics that create GEC Role of traditional science and knowledge (make visible the science which is unvisible) Go beyond biodiversity preservation to biodiversity prospection 2. Research priorities for Future Earth relevant for the region

How to scale up sustainability Integrated strategies for mitigation of extreme events (include social information in climate models to be policy-relevant) Overview of local adaptation measures in LAC 2. Research priorities for Future Earth relevant for the region

Evaluation of existing programmes in LAC regarding their processes and their impacts on society (avoid reinventing the wheel) Establish a set of sustainability indicators for the LAC region What is science education for sustainability = need to research it as well implement it Strengthening linkages between case studies and global assessment Combines research projects between civil society, local governance and academia = need criteria on multi- stakeholder approach in research Balance funding among the different perspectives (and not only to mainstream approaches to sustainability 4. What kind of research activities would you like to see conducted within Future Earth?

Build capacity on how social scientists and natural scientists can work together Need science education for teachers Address the disconnect between stakeholders (national) and the international science (especially language barriers) Include a communication and implementation part in the research projects Create a wikipedia (social network) in Future Earth Democratisation of science publication Develop data information system and common standards 5. What kind of outreach or other activities would you like to see conducted within Future Earth?
