2 Vocabulary  Area—The number of square units needed to cover a surface enclosed by a geometric figure.  Base—Any side of a parallelogram or triangle. The bases of a trapezoid are parallel sides.  Height—The length of the segment perpendicular to the base with endpoints on opposite sides. 2

3 Notes  To find the area of a parallelogram you multiply the base and height.  A = bh or A = b · h 3

4 Find the area of each parallelogram. Round to the nearest tenth. a. rectangle: l = 16mm, w = 12 mm b. square: s = 27 ft c. rectangle: l = 65 mi, w = 48 mi d. square: s = 42 m e. b = 7 in., h = 4 in. f. b = 9 m, h = 1.5 m g. b = 1.25 cm, h = 2 cm 4

5  The perimeter of a rectangle is 72 m. The width of the rectangle is 16 m.  What is the area of the rectangle? 5
