8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 20081/14 Draft Replies and Actions to the Recommendations of the Review Panel for Final Review of the First Phase (2004-8) of the Cluster Active Archive held at ESTEC on 20-21 May 2008

8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 20082/14 R1. For the purposes of quality assurance, the board recommends that the CAA provide visual representation of cross-calibration results. This is a new activity and is one of the tasks of the new YGT (Clemens Gruenberger) The plots will include comparisons of plasma densities (PEACE,CIS,WHISPER,EFW), drift velocities (EDI,EFW,PEACE,CIS), and dc electric fields (EFW,EDI,CIS,PEACE), dc magnetic fields (EDI,FGM), electron fluxes (EDI/AE, PEACE) etc. Similar GUI to the existing plots will be adopted so that the users can view the pre- generated products; on-demand plotting capability may also be provided but this will only for the fixed sets of panels If the teams have any suggestions, please let us know

8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 20083/14 R2. The board endorses the CAA’s proposal to organize a comprehensive peer review process of the instrument data sets. This will ensure the completeness and quality of the archived data. The plan is to this activity in three levels: o We will create a user survey form that the users give their feedback on the usability of the products. This will be an online form and visible on the front page of the CAA. o Another, perhaps a bit more technical form is created for the most active users of the CAA. These users will be approach individually by the CAA and ask them to give feedback. o Finally a peer review panel is formed where a number of people will look at individual instruments or a set of instruments. The biggest problem is to identify the right people who are available and willing to do this task. If the teams have any suggestions, please let us know

8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 20084/14 R3. The board endorses the CAA’s plan to generate Survey Parameter data to facilitate long time scale data plotting and statistical studies. This is tied to R1 activities to some extent. One-minute values (TBD) will be calculated, and the first step is to identify the key parameters. If the teams have any parameters they wish to be included, please let us know. They can be related to your or other teams’ products

8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 20085/14 R4. The board recommends that the long-term archive should retain the capabilities and tools that have already been developed, and will continue to be developed, and should continue to make these available to the users. Comment is fully agreed The potential problem is that the final archive has available only the features offered by the central system used for other missions. Then the features available and developed for CAA could not be available to users, e.g., plotting or searching Urgency of the issue depends on the schedule of the final archive, which is currently in year 2011. If the 3 rd extension is approved, hopefully the CAA continues its activities at ESTEC as before due to strong synergy aspects Goal: The CAA should keep developing the system, GUI etc so that the other data archives will find the CAA attractive and wish to adopt a similar system

8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 20086/14 R5. The board recommends that the CAA investigates, and if possible, develops any data-mining facilities that would maximize the scientific exploitation of the archived data.  Data mining of the high-resolution data would be both complex and compute intensive.  This activity is therefore related to the production of the survey parameters. (Board recommendation R3).  Initially the two activities will run in parallel. The PP/SP will be used for development and testing of the data search capability.  Functionality will be kept simple. External tools such as CDPP/AMDA and IC/QSAS offer the more advanced capabilities.  Design is at an early level; community feedback is therefore encouraged.

8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 20087/14 Data Search – Design Concept  User defines a search expression, time interval and result granularity e.g. B[3] > 0 for 2002-01-01/2002-12-31, 5min  Expressions will support parameters from more than one dataset Join will be simple nearest neighbour (with delta T constraint) Expressions will support arithmetic operators (but no automatic SI conversion)  Input datasets will be handled (streamed) to allow long time intervals  Output will be a list of time intervals that match the expression  The list of intervals will be saved to the user’s profile Manipulation may be provided to edit, merge or join time lists Support will be provided to make data requests using the time lists

8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 20088/14 R6. The board welcomes the development of on-demand plotting facilities within the CAA, and recommends the inclusion of additional panels, such as pitch-angle information from particle instruments. The visualization of PA products wait the delivery of new PEACE PA products; also CIS PA will be displayed If the teams have any plots they wish to be included, please let us know

8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 20089/14 R7. The board requests the ability for users to download the input files that are used to create the on-demand plots. There is a link to the files used for creating the plot that users can download

8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 200810/14 R8. The graphical interface should provide the opportunity to produce an editable list of intervals for subsequent batch downloading. The option to record a comment for each interval would also be useful. This is doable and will be added in the next release of GUI The editable lists will appear under User Area The list can be used in both web and command-line interface

8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 200811/14 R9. The board recommends that the science user working group should be encouraged to provide input to augment the data sets available and the graphical interface for data plotting. The SUWG has not been very active, as it is difficult to activate our peers. This activity will be linked to an overall peer review activity (see R2)

8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 200812/14 R10. The board endorses the CAA’s plan to improve the web-interface to the documentation area and to ensure that all necessary documentation be easily available and held locally by the CAA, for instance ESOC files, caveat information, instrument system papers and documents, etc. There is plenty of tasks to be done on ESOC files. o The files will be made available through a separate interface where users can browse/search documents. o This requires creation of some metadata for each file which have to be partially done manually at least for some documents Caveat information should be delivered together with the data files, not through the documentation. o Action item to all teams to provide separate caveat files in cef format that will be provided to the users as separate files when they request data Status of instrument papers/documentation should be reviewed: plenty of documents seem to be missing

8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 200813/14 R11. The board recommends that as long as digital data are not available on the CAA, a link to the WBD online software page is needed. this is done.

8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 200814/14 General recommendations to all teams T1. The board notes the lack of caveat information from most instruments and requests its immediate provision. T2. The board requests that all instrument teams confirm that all supporting products, such as housekeeping data, that is necessary for the full interpretation of data is provided in the CAA. T3. The board wishes to reinforce recommendation #25 of the previous review and asks the instrument teams to produce a formal technical report on their instrument calibration and cross-calibration activities. The board thanks the EDI team for already providing such a calibration report. T4. The board recommends that all teams produce a brief user guide to their data sets to help users to select the right products for their needs and to interpret caveat and quality information. T5. The board reminds all instrument teams of the necessity to provide all data from years 2001-2009 to the CAA before June 2010.
