M ACHINE Our machine is the Lever. A lever is a rigid bar that is free to move around a fixed point.

H OW D OES IT WORK ? There are three types of lever. The first lever is called First-Class Levers. For an example a screwdriver being used as a first-class lever to open a paint can. The second lever is called Second-Class Lever. For an example is a wheelbarrow, it rotates around its fulcrum. The third lever is called Third-Class Lever. The output distance over which the third-class lever exerts its force is always larger than the input distance you move the lever through.

T HIS IS WHAT A LEVER LOOKS LIKE.

W HAT IS IT USED FOR. It can be used for your wheelbarrows. A screwdriver with a paint can. You sweeping the ground.

H OW DO YOU CALCULATE IMA FOR YOUR MACHINE ? To Calculate the ideal mechanical advantage of any lever, divide the input arm by the output arm.

O THER IMPORTANT INFORMATION The word lever came from the French. The earliest remaining writings regarding levers date from the 3rd century BC and were provided by Archimedes. " Give me a place to stand, and I shall move the earth. " is a remark of Archimedes who formally stated the correct mathematical principle of levers (quoted by Pappus of Alexandria).Archimedes
