4. AMAZON GENERAL INFORMATION Amazon occupies 6% of the planet's surface; covers more than half of the tropical rainforest, and thus, it represents 15% of the overall process of photosynthesis. Its rivers contribute about 20% of the world's fresh water into the oceans. The basin has 25,000 kilometers of navigable rivers. The Amazon River extends 6.9 thousand square kilometers and has over 1,000 tributaries. The region expands over approx. 7M kilometer squares miles. corresponding to almost 40% of South America and 54% of the total area of ​​the eight ACTO member countries of the Amazon. Amazon has approximately 385 indigenous and references to 71 confirmed isolated groups (RAISG, 2012 ), and other tribal communities, who speak highly diverse languages ​​belonging to 49 indigenous language families (Línguas da Amazônia, Aryon DallÍgna Rodriguez, 1986).

5. It contains an unusually high diversity of species, about one quarter of that existing in the world. It is estimated that the Amazon contains 30,000 species of vascular plants, including from 5,000 to 10,000 species of trees. Of the total, 2,000 have been classified by their usefulness for food, medicine and other purposes. The Amazon is a vulnerable region, because of, among others, deforestation and agricultural expansion, as well as illegal logging, forest fires, and illegal trafficking of wildlife, as well as climatic extremes. According to the "Biodiversity Scenario: Projections for the Twentieth Century, Change in Biodiversity and Associated Ecosystem Services" of the CBD, there is growing scientific consensus that complex interactions of these and other challenges could lead to the destruction of the Amazon forests. If the current trend in land use and climate change continues, deforestation and destruction would leave less than 50% of the Amazon forest by 2030 and less than 10% of the original forest by 2080. 6. AMAZON OPPORTUNITIES Amazonian countries for several years made ​​significant actions to reduce loss factors of biodiversity and to increase conservation and sustainable use of it. Various strategies and action plans have been adopted by these countries, mostly in response to national needs and others, within the framework of international conventions and agreements to cooperate in all areas of work of the ACT. Development of action plans in environment, indigenous affairs, tourism, science and technology and health, as tools to define and implement actions to ensure compliance with the objectives of conservation and sustainable use of renewable natural resources and for economic and social development of the region. Declaration of Manaus Manaus – Brazil, 26 November, 2009 Heads of State of the Member Countries issued a Delaration on the ACTO, with a mandate to give the Organization “a new and modern role as a forum for cooperation, exchange, knowledge and joint projection to face new international challenges that arise.” In this context, it mandated the Ministers of Foreign Affairs that “…to strengthen the process of cooperation, prepare a new Strategic Agenda of ACTO for the short, medium and long term, which shall include regional actions to support the national initiatives.”

X Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of ACT Declaration of Lima, Lima – Peru, 30 November 2010 Decided “to adopt measures to promote and reaffirm the renewed role of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) as a forum for cooperation, exchange, knowledge and joint projection to meet the new international challenges.” Approved the new Amazon Cooperation Strategic Agenda with 8 years of implementation period.

37. FUTURE CHALLENGES To give more political density to the work of ACTO.
