2
What is Network Monitoring Network Monitoring involves the use of a system that is constantly monitoring a network looking for: slow or failing systems Or other errors
3
Network Monitoring Networks can be monitored using software programmes These programmes check the performance of the network to check for errors They can check the network in intervals that range from as little as every minute to several hours The Network Monitoring System then sends a warning to the network administrators incase of failure.
4
Network Monitoring Some of these programmes can be used to monitor the traffic of the network They can also monitor the network for crashed or overloaded servers They can also monitor the network for threats from outside
5
Network Monitoring These tests can be measured in several different ways. Some common examples: Response time Availably or Uptime
6
Network Monitoring There are many ways of testing a network Some examples: Messages can be sent through the STMP and received by the POP3 or IMAP to test the e-mail server An http requests can be sent to test that web server
7
Network Monitoring The network monitoring system will also catch certain errors including: Connection errors Status request failures Time outs If documents or messages cannot be received
8
Network Monitoring The Network Monitoring system is also responsible for alerting the network admin if there is one of these errors It can do so by: Sending an e-mail Sending out an alarm Sending text messages
9
Network Monitoring Web server monitoring is a very common type of network monitoring This is very crucial because of the economic nature of modern websites and the financial devastation that can occur because of an error in the web server in a network
10
Network Monitoring Web monitoring usually involves a service sending a http request to the web server If there is no response or a slow response, then a message is sent to the network admin Web monitoring can also check https, ftp, SMTP, POP3, IMAP and many others Responses can be sent every hour or as often as every minute
